On March 22, 1976 — the galaxy far, far away officially came to life… Principal photography for Star Wars began in the deserts of Tozeur — transforming Tunisia into the iconic world of Tatooine. What started as a risky sci-fi project quickly became cinematic history. • Tunisia was chosen because its landscape looked convincingly “alien” — and the name “Tatooine” was inspired by the nearby town of Tataouine • The production faced brutal sandstorms that damaged equipment and delayed filming • Many original set pieces — including parts of Luke’s homestead — still exist today and are pilgrimage sites for fans • R2-D2 frequently malfunctioned in the sand, forcing crew members to improvise constantly It all started right here… in the sand.
