We launched this product six months ago at @useorigin and have learned a lot in answering over 1,000,000 personal finance questions from our users. 1. For specific, repetitive use cases customers want purpose built features. Chat is an amazing accompaniment that enhances our experience, but when a user has a defined task (eg tracking or managing money), richer, deep features are much more useful. 2. Finance Chat is poweful to the extent you know what and how to ask. Simple queries (how much did I spend where) are more easily discovered and engaged with in product UI. The value of chat is in the complex and idiosyncratic. Equipping users with the tools to become power users in this way is critical. 3. The user doesn’t know what they don’t know. The killer feature is taking all known financial questions a user should be asking, turning that schema into proactive monitoring and telling the user exactly what financial opportunities exist in real time and allowing agentic execution of that opportunity. This requires the right combination of determinism, grounding and LLM to execute well and is my personal product focus at the moment.
ChatGPT@ChatGPTapp

A preview for Pro users: a new personal finance experience in ChatGPT. Pro users in the U.S. can securely connect financial accounts, see where their money is going, and ask questions based on the information they choose to connect. Your full financial picture, now in ChatGPT.

Origin Financial@useorigin·
Nearly half of college students say they’ve spent a meaningful amount of time thinking about changing their major because of AI, and about 1 in 6 have already done it. That’s a pretty aggressive response to something that, at least so far, hasn’t actually played out in the way people keep describing it. If you look at what AI can do right now, it’s not replacing jobs in clean, obvious chunks. It’s just getting better at pieces of them. MIT’s latest work has models handling around 65% of text-based tasks at a “good enough” level, with that number likely to climb over time — but “good enough” still comes with a lot of caveats, and most of it still requires a person involved somewhere along the line. So the reality is slower and more uneven than the narrative. Jobs aren’t disappearing overnight — they’re getting chipped at, reorganized, and in some cases, made more valuable depending on how the work changes. Students don’t really have the luxury of waiting to see how that shakes out, though. If you’re in school right now, you’re making decisions based on what you think the market will look like in a few years, not what it looks like today. And right now, the signal you’re getting is a mix of “learn this immediately” and “this entire category of work might not exist,” often in the same conversation.

@useorigin yo sharing some feedback. The app is beautiful, and the concept is great. However the assistant and categorization are so so bad that it'd be impossible to renew. It's confusing because it should have all the right context and still makes the most obtuse mistakes frequently

Hey Scott...appreciate the feedback and you taking the time to check out Origin. Fair point on the time ranges. Our default net worth view is 30 days today, and it automatically expands as you’re with us longer. The reason longer ranges look flat right now is that we’re constrained by how far back aggregators provide historical net worth data when you first connect accounts. That said, we’re actively building historical import so you can bring in past data and get a much more meaningful long-term view from day one. Shoot over more feedback as you continue to use the platform!

all of @useorigin 's chart's are useless and look like this and default to 1 week. Default views need to be at least 90 days, obviously my net worth has changed very little over 7 days, 2 of which were the weekend.

Shoutout to @useorigin for being one of the best experiences I’ve had with the new generation of AI-first apps. I constantly find myself feeling like it’s two steps ahead of what I’m looking for. They put information in front of you that you didn’t know you wanted. And any detail you go looking for is always there exactly where you hoped it would be. It feels effortless in a way that all other finance and budgeting apps have never been able to achieve. Big kudos.

I really want to like @useorigin it's the right level of detail I want about my finances, and the AI seems decent. it's not over-complicated, and the stuff shown is what I'd expect to see (just simple tables of data) I'm struggling to get set up though. things I've hit: * The CSV import is very basic. the columns have to be in the exact order it expects. worse, when it fails to import, the UX is awful. it shows a generic error as if the server is down. turns out I had the columns wrong * you can't turn a manual account (created via CSV) into a "linked" one which syncs transactions. I have 10 years worth of data. don't care about >3 yrs, but I'd like to keep the last 3 years of data at least * you can't delete the builtin categories. you can "archive" them but I just hate this kind of thing. I want to trim everything down to just what I want (I only use ~6 categories) * I added my mortgage account but it simply doesn't show up anywhere. there is spending/invest/equity sections, but where to liabilities go? it's not even in spending: I can't filter by this account. where did it go? in forecast there is a "liabilities" row but it's not even there. but the AI is aware of this account! * I need to setup a trust but it wants me to pay $300 upfront. the price is too good to be true, it needs to do better at building trust before asking me to pay. how do I know it's going to do a good job? * Small thing, but I really like being able to see a running balance when viewing transactions for an account (also, make it easier to view a specific account) * The equity feature, which is something I thought my be cool to have in the same place as my other finances, is very basic. doesn't make it easy to handle refresh grants and a lot of other complex stuff I like a lot of it, but I wish the core features were more mature. will be keeping an eye on it

This is the first app I’ve tried that might actually dethrone @copilotmoney for budgeting and tracking. Really looking forward to having a fully integrated AI financial advisor. Only $1 for the first year ain’t bad 👀 useorigin.com/referral?refer…

who's building a banking app that actually helping their users and i dont mean just budgeting or tracking subscriptions > suggesting investing strategy based on the users income and spending > auto-saving based on your actual behavior not arbitrary goals > negotiating your bills without you lifting a finger > finding best credit cards for what you most spend on there are some apps (like rocket money) that do part of this but i feel like there has to be something better out there. what is it?
