🧵Short Thread: Many Americans either do not understand or knowingly dismiss the the breathtaking rise of China’s military. This hubris is extremely dangerous, and it’s worth understanding how such hubris manifested itself during the run up to WW2. @ElbridgeColby

If senators are not on the floor debating, any confirmation process slow down is the fault of the majority party - in this case, Republicans

Thune isn't the first GOP leader to see a Republican president's nominees get bogged down in the confirmation process. But he could be the first in recent decades to handle the challenge differently.

@AmericanaAesth @DreamLeaf5 It also means equal justice for all, and that includes non-whites. The American promise has been expanded to encompass all who accept the foundational American principles of order, justice, and freedom.

The only people "entitled" to American soil, wealth, opportunities, etc, are the American people. The fact that this is controversial suggests we are an occupied country

@boydinst Protectionism has destroyed the US merchant marine. No other transportation industry in the US operates this way. The airline industry is reserved for US companies, but the airplanes are not required to be built domestically. The US has a vibrant aerospace manufacturing industry.

The short answer is in the article: To repeal and replace with a modernized policy framework and other proactive efforts to revitalize maritime. We will elaborate further in future posts. Sign up and follow along at boydinstitute.org

@boydinst @carolineccurtis I asked earlier what you wish to do? Do you wish just for a repeal then nothing? Or do you wish to replace. If you wish just for a repeal how would you deal with the outcomes of said repeal?

@ElbridgeColby If a crucial part of someone’s strategy depends on something that is very unlikely to happen, that says something about their strategy…

Andrew, do you have any advice for us if we do not double defense spending ? Given that this isn’t on the political radar, policymakers will need to deal with scarcity. Otherwise, it’s the joke about the economist advice to those marooned with canned food: assume a can opener.
Andrew A. Michta@andrewmichta

@ElbridgeColby. I’ve been saying this ever since Russia launched its second invasion of #Ukraine in 2022. I’m glad we are on the same page here. We need to stop our handwringing about how our forces are too small and therefore we must focus on the #Pacific instead of the #Atlantic, which is a false dichotomy anyway. The reality is that there is no free lunch. We need to double our defense spending, expand the size of the force, and re-think how we procure weapons and especially what we buy when it comes to weapons and munitions. The defense industrial base will not get fixed until the gov’t issues long-term contracts that will impel our defense and space contractors to invest in new capacity. We need to re-shore and restore our industrial base so that we can produce weapons and munitions at speed and scale, with redundancies built-in in case of war. Here’s something I wrote a while back; may be of interest. atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/new-atla…

@ElbridgeColby It is within the interests of the United States to give Ukraine military aid in such a manner that does not detract from building up hard power in Asia. It is not within the interests of the US to get dragged into a ground war in Ukraine.

@ElbridgeColby Defeating the Nazis without the Soviets would have required sacrificing millions of American lives, or potentially dropping nuclear bombs on Germany. The Soviets made incredible sacrifices to defeat the Nazis. Such things should never be forgotten.

"The news is not just bad, it is worsening daily. The ground on the front lines is drying out, bringing us into the season to attack. Russia has momentum unlike anything seen since March 2022...Much of the world may be tiring of this war, but Putin is not." cnn.com/2024/05/13/eur…

@ElbridgeColby The positive aspect is that a denial defense is not prohibitively expensive. If the US can posture/disperse its forces across the pacific, develop an expansive array of sensors for targeting, and build up stocks of critical missiles then we’d be in a much better place.

Pretty basic math. Common sense. (Obviously there’s the base budget too. But we know from common sense and independent sources, not to mention PACOM’s unfunded list, that the base budget is way behind what we need for China.)
Mankosmash@Mankosmash

@ElbridgeColby I love how $2 billion to oppose China's $700+ billion/yr military, but $60 billion per year on top of Europe's aid isn't enough to stop Russia's paltry $100 billion/yr. These people are lying to your face & don't even respect you enough to make it plausible. 🙄

Why is this speech so bad? Every great speech in history has a common denominator: unvarnished truth. Truth is Xi’s a dangerous dictator. If he starts war many in this room will die. Die to protect millions. We must work harder to be ready. Please tell them the truth admiral.
John Ʌ Konrad V@johnkonrad

Please look at the faces admiral. Watch the body language. Did you see one head nod in agreement? Or do you see skepticism, failure to fully comprehend & zone outs? War is knocking admiral and these sailors will be in harms way. Word salad leadership is no longer acceptable.

Boyd Mafias (first principles tech innovation) in autonomous aircraft (Anduril) and spacelaunch (SpaceX) are moving the US forward in national security despite the best efforts of the military-industrial complex to do otherwise. We need another mafia in autonomous maritime, one that will reinvent it so completely that it will make existing ship-building capacity obsolete.
Michael Guimarin@MichaelGuimarin

I’m not tired of winning. Anduril is going to expand their portfolio to everything. They have enough scale that they can target every major hardware program. I bet it’s 20x lower cost too when all is said and done. When new A10?
