I recently discovered that this textbook “tender” scandal with the DBE and Lighthouse Publishers are even more fishy. Turns out DBE slipped in a new procurement policy telling schools they can only order the cheapest 2 books on the catalogue even if there are 5 or 8 options to choose from. Is it coincidence that Lighthouse publishers are the cheapest? Is it coincidence that the founder’s mother has a company that receives funds from DBE for educational projects? Is it worth exposing this type of corruption? It will get investigated and nothing will change. No irregularities will be found. The state will become the only publisher of school books in a few years. Not only did publishers lose millions they will be closing down one after the other. Everyone except Lighthouse. The mysterious publishing house that emerged out of nowhere backed with funding of at least R50 million they borrowed from friends and family.

Secunda Home Affairs Officials Caught Selling South African IDs to Foreigners! Two former Department of Home Affairs workers from Secunda have been arrested and remanded in custody for identity theft and fraud. Portia Mtshweni and Nondumiso Maboyi allegedly helped issue South African IDs to Zimbabweans and a Mozambican, plus a fake birth certificate for a Zimbabwean child.This is the kind of corruption that makes South Africans so angry. While locals battle to get basic documents, some officials were busy selling our citizenship like cheap goods. 1. I had a really sad conversation recently with a leading African intellectual & Pan-Africanist on the anti-migrant protests in SA. He expressed surprise & disappointment at the ANC & broader political leaderships’ response to the protests. The exception was Malema & the EFF.
