@White_Chapel0 @TrevorFarrell12 @JerryMoloney1 Adjusting application rates to match growth would be a better fit surely? So many variables
English

@_Michael_Nolan @TrevorFarrell12 @JerryMoloney1 Or concentrate on the growth period where uptake is increasing (March onwards).
Applying the same slurry/fertiliser when conditions are getting worse & growth rates are declining (September on) doesn't make sense. It also ads to the leachable nutrient surplus before winter.
English

@White_Chapel0 @TrevorFarrell12 @JerryMoloney1 Or just move away from spreading at incorrect times, regardless of dates. Spread when weather conditions and growth are going to take up the nutrients, the graph shows when to start and stop with the growth curve. Oct and jan seems v silly conpared to growth curve
English

@_Michael_Nolan @TrevorFarrell12 @JerryMoloney1 We basically need to move away from spreading directly before and after the closed period (i.e. storage management), and concentrate on slurry and soil testing and adequate storage facilities for the number of livestock held (i.e. nutrient and growth management)
English

@White_Chapel0 @TrevorFarrell12 @JerryMoloney1 I agree with the chemical bit.But as the graph shows, more growth in oct than Jan. I see where you're coming from but not ok to spread in oct and ok in jan makes very little sense in my opinion, given the growth graph above
English

@_Michael_Nolan @TrevorFarrell12 @JerryMoloney1 The problem is that even if applied in decent conditions, growth in winter is significantly reduced/zero resulting in poor utilisation.
The result is loss to surface or ground water.
Basically, if you wouldn't spread chemical fertiliser, you shouldn't consider spreading slurry.
English

@White_Chapel0 @TrevorFarrell12 @JerryMoloney1 Think it would work well, heavy rain due, no spreading allowed, regardless of date, good conditions/growth in oct, spreading permitted etc. What's your view?
English

@White_Chapel0 @TrevorFarrell12 @JerryMoloney1 I wouldn't be putting bag n on in dec and Jan, no. But in Oct I'd have no problem with slurry if it were allowed, conditions seem to be better for a small bit in October rather than Jan, obviously temps and rainfall differ every year. I'd still prefer a blight like warning
English

@White_Chapel0 @TrevorFarrell12 @JerryMoloney1 Thats a good graph, but it does show more growth in oct and nov than there is in dec and Jan. I'd be in favour of a similar system to the blight warning we hear so often on the farming weather. Or possibly move that closed period a month further on, start of Nov to 13 feb
English

@TrevorFarrell12 @JerryMoloney1 It should be changed based on what? One observation where grass that was fertilised field grew more than grass that wasn't?
How much of that was taken up and how much was lost?
Spreading later is more beneficial & less risky as proven over the long term

Got a bit of advice on this community earlier on in the year and delighted I did. Was going to get a walk behind machine of sorts but the almost 82 year old dad has taken to the ride on like a duck to water! All advice was and is very much appreciated 👍👍💪💪
Joe Healy@jhealyq
Want to get a cubicle bedder for next winter. Thinking about walk behind with cubicle brush, scraper and lime bedder. What's best machine? Thanks 👍

@tomphelan01 @mhoade7 @PatHoll96523641 Lovely job Tom....you did the right thing putting the tanks at both ends
English

@mhoade7 @PatHoll96523641 Architect recommended a double tank but I prefer the idea of a tank at either end. No scraping behind the cubicle end walls and years down the line whenever slats need to be replaced il be glad theres nothing built on top of them😅

@CiaranOShea11 @keenan17 The bit that pissed off most farmers was there was no communication about this before they had arrived on the farm
English

@keenan17 Suppose thats their choice and there are no department regulations/restrictions against it when a herd is closed, whereas there are restrictions around open days, farm visits/demos etc
I dont think, i know, department wouldnt allow an average farm that leeway
English

@keenan17 @CiaranOShea11 You are obligated to tell a contractor before he comes if you are locked up jack. He is required to disinfect after spreading in a restricted herd also. Holding a farm walk for hundreds of farmers to attend while restricted is very different
English

@CiaranOShea11 Same thing though. They are going from farm to farm day in day out. Slurry spreading the highest risk
English

@davidm3329 @CiaranOShea11 @SeanMoy98947674 And how did they justify it? Thats a joke, gather everyone around at the start to tell them
English

@CiaranOShea11 @SeanMoy98947674 Everyone knew. They explained it on the day at the start.
English

@CiaranOShea11 That is ridiculous to be opening a restricted farm up to people from every corner of the country. Very Irresponsible
