Inspired by cities with real, expansive transit systems, I’ve created an updated @CATSRideTransit fantasy map. It consists of Light Rail, Streetcars, Commuter Rail, Amtrak, BRT, and monorail. Below is an Area Map, a System Map, and an Uptown reference map.

In this thread 🧵, bro will continue to describe Sunk Cost Fallacy when trying to explain how it’s not
ingrid 英格丽@retrophys1cal

@_Rob__G_ It’s not a sunk cost fallacy. CRTPO asked NCDOT to build toll lanes on I-77, NCDOT spent $60mn to design them, then CRTPO changed their minds and canceled the project. CRTPO and its members should be on the hook for the wasted money, not NC taxpayers.

Search on social media, you'll find videos with millions of views from influencers posting about running marathons with "no training" or "minimal training." But isn't putting in the training miles part of the whole marathon experience? runnersworldmag.visitlink.me/9aqsCd

Interesting- The Charlotte Regional Business Alliance put out a statement expressing disappointment in last night's vote but also claimed "NCDOT retains the authority to move this project forward." I've reached out to NCDOT and CRBA: "Last night’s vote by CRTPO to rescind support for the I-77 South expansion is deeply disappointing – and shortsighted as the full consequences of the decision are not understood. Coming on the heels of Charlotte City Council's narrow six to five vote earlier this month, two regional bodies have turned their backs on a project that they have been planning for two decades, backed by data, and critical to the economic future of this region. What is at stake is significant. CRTPO's withdrawal sends a damaging signal to NCDOT that regional consensus has collapsed. While NCDOT retains the authority to move this project forward, political opposition of this magnitude puts the June RFP release, and with it, $700 million in state investment, in real jeopardy. If that RFP does not go out, this project does not get built. And if this project does not get built, the consequences for commuters, employers, freight movement, and regional competitiveness will be felt for generations. The CLT Alliance continues to support this project, which was still receiving public input to solve community concerns in the corridor. NCDOT has been listening and had a genuine desire to continue to work on improving the project, which was only 15% designed, to meet our community’s needs. I-77 South is critical to Charlotte, the region, and the entire State as a key economic corridor. The CLT Alliance supports visionary ideas that move this region forward. All residents and businesses have a shared stake in the success of our region, and we must keep working collaboratively on solutions.

Thomas Massie and I don’t agree on much. But billionaires and special interest groups spent $35 million in Kentucky to unseat one conservative congressman — all because he stood up to Trump. It’s everything that's wrong with our politics today.

October 16, 2024. I live-tweeted the CRTPO meeting stream that made the I-77 South toll lane proposal, very real. Over a year and a half before the broader public was fully briefed or asked for feedback. Giving public comment last night and then watching the vote felt surreal.

“The project is a managed lane… we can’t widen our way out of congestion.” - NCDOT at CRTPO on I-77 South tolls. Charlotte’s still stuck in traffic. Low use on I-77 North, and they want to spend $3.4B more? We need smarter investments like public transit, not more of the same.

Statement from Charlotte City Councilmember Renee Johnson. Without her motion, this doesn’t happen Today, the people spoke... and the people won. Communities across our region made it clear that they wanted a genuine voice in the process, not a process with a pre-determined outcome. Six of us intentionally voted in support of the rescission, and I thank my colleagues who stood with the community and recognized the importance of restoring public trust in this process. This was never about stopping progress. It was about making sure the public is respected, heard, and included before decisions of this magnitude move forward. Infrastructure planning must be transparent, collaborative, and community-driven. I look forward to working with our state & regional partners to create a process rooted in meaningful public engagement, thoughtful analysis, and real exploration of all available options, without assumptions already made before the community conversation even begins. When residents organize, engage, and stand together, their voices matter. This is proof of that.

From what I’ve been told through this process, one of the biggest mistakes NCDOT made was releasing these designs showing potential widespread neighborhood impacts AFTER the RFQ had already been issued. Yes the design was scaled back and it was early in the process But the outrage was never tampered and any trust was eroded. Damage was done

Streets with protected bike lanes can see total injury crashes drop by 40% for all road users (drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists), because the physical separation reduces chaos and conflict points. That keeps car insurance rates lower for you
