The issue with XIII's linearity isn't that it's linear in of itself, it's that XIII has no sense of place to its world, no sense of its geography at all, nobody can picture where Bodhum or Palumpolum or Pulse Vestige or Eden or Sunleth Waterscape are or have any perspective of where they're located in relation to one another, they're just a bunch of disconnected zones you are funnelled through via story cutscenes with nothing breaking up the monotany, while in other FF you have a sense of place within the world, like in FF7 you know where Kalm is in relation to Midgar in relation to Junon etc, or in FF15 you know where Insomnia is in relation to Lestallum to Altissia to Niflheim, etc.
In FFX you have towns and locations that you can picture in your head exactly where they are in relation to each other, you have minigames and you have the freedom to revist locations you've been to, there's shops, there's NPC's to talk to and actual sidequests, in XIII there's none of that and the most "sidequest" it ever has are just monster fights against monsters in the one area where all you can do is just fight monsters.
On top of that XIII's character upgrade system is chapter locked until 20 hours into the game which is once you've cleared 10 out of 13 chapters which only contributes to the hand holdy linearity it has.
Like FF13 is the one FF that has no map of its world in the game, and in the Ultimania a "map" of Cocoon was published and it looks like nothing like what anyone could picture anything in Cocoon would be, then when you get to Gran Pulse in chapter 11 the area becomes a flat grass plain with nothing but monster fights or you continue on to 2 more linear chapters that have just as little sense of place to Gran Pulse as anything in Cocoon.
Like bro where the fuck in Bodhum does Lightning even live? I know where Cloud's house is in Nibelheim, I know where the Citadel in Insomnia is where Noctis's lived, where is Lightning's peanut shaped house in Bodhum?
The worst excuse FF13 defenders have for this is "oh but they're on the run from the government!?!", as if that doesn't apply to practically every FF party in relation to the antagonistic force they're fighting against. Cloud and the gang are literally wanted by Shinra, Noctis and the gang are fugitives in exile on the run from Niflheim who are constantly up their ass too, etc, it's just poorly executed in FF13.

need to actually play FFXIII for myself one day because everyone shits on it for being linear, but we also live in a day and age where most people acknowledge that FFX is good which is also a very linear game.
