I needed a quick gift for a friends son. Since he’s a guitar player, I fired up the CNC and made a quick guitar pick case for him. Used a piece of olive wood that I’ve had laying around forever, and it turned out quite nice.

Non-citizens, whether documented or not, are 100% subject to U.S. laws. They can be arrested, prosecuted, deported, and taxed on income they earn here. But that’s not the same thing as full political jurisdiction, in the constitutional sense. They don’t have, and aren’t expected to take on, core civic rights and obligations that are reserved for citizens, like voting in federal elections or serving on juries. So, saying someone can be arrested or imprisoned doesn’t fully answer what “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” means. It shows the government has authority over them, but not that they’re fully part of the political community which the amendment is talking about.

@_Tim_Adams_ @mattvanswol @data_republican @EndWokeness Being subject to the jurisdiction thereof means any person the US can exercise jurisdiction over. If one can be arrested and imprisoned by the federal government, then the US is exercising jurisdiction over them.

@TapestryLife @mattvanswol @data_republican @EndWokeness Being prosecutable under our laws, whether that’s a tourist, illegal alien, invader, etc…, is not the same as the full ‘subject to the jurisdiction thereof’ the framers required. That meant complete political allegiance and domicile.

@_Tim_Adams_ @mattvanswol @data_republican @EndWokeness Right. ANYONE on US soil, except for the examples below, are under US jurisdiction. If illegals aren't under US jurisdiction, then they can't be arrested or charged because they wouldn't be subject to our laws.

@_Tim_Adams_ @mattvanswol @data_republican @EndWokeness The first part of the 14thA was written to explain who receives US citizenship. "All persons born" on US soil receive it. Not just children of freed slaves. ANY PERSON born on US soil receives it, and there are ZERO caveats in the Constitution regarding that.

@AJamesMcCarthy @PaladinRood Blue Origin's New Shepard is a perfect example of going mostly straight up. It reaches space and gives passengers a few minutes of weightlessness. But without building huge horizontal velocity, it just coasts up and falls straight back down.

You'd think so, but nope! Going straight up will get you to space, but you'd fall right back down the moment you cut off your engines. The way to get into "orbit" (which is how you stay in space and experience zero G without burning fuel) is by moving sideways fast enough that your sideways motion creates a ballistic arc that keeps your altitude above Earth. They're still in freefall, but moving so fast they "miss" the planet. From orbit, they can then burn the engines at the right time to break out of orbit and fall towards the moon once they get close enough, with precise heading that allows them to "miss" it and fall back down to the planet in what's known as a free return trajectory. That's how this works in a nutshell, but orbital mechanics are tough to wrap your head around so I'd strongly suggest spending some more time reading about it!

No one said the Fourteenth Amendment only applies to slaves and their descendants. It was passed after the Civil War to overturn Dred Scott and guarantee citizenship, especially for freed slaves and their children. But the text applies more broadly than that. The real issue is the phrase “subject to the jurisdiction thereof.” That is where the debate is, not whether you or anyone else born here is a citizen.

@_Tim_Adams_ @mattvanswol @data_republican @EndWokeness Ok I’m not a slave or a know descendant of slaves, I’m I a legal U.S. Citizen since your side claims the 14th Amendment was meant to only grant legal citizenship to slaves and their descendants? What about the rest of us?

The 14th Amendment was passed right after the Civil War to ensure freed slaves and their kids were full citizens, and to fix the mess from the Dred Scott decision. It was never meant to hand out citizenship through some kind of loophole for people who enter the country illegally or for birth tourists looking for a quick anchor baby.

@EndWokeness Wow... If someone breaks into your house and has a baby in your living room, that baby is not your heir. It's not your child because it was born on your property. That's birthright citizenship. This is so painfully obvious to anyone with a brain.

NASA’s Artemis II livestream really makes you appreciate @SpaceX’s launch broadcasts. Bad camera tracking, no onboard cameras, countdown timer disappeared, NASA even showed people in the crowd instead of stage separation lol. The screen also blacked out twice during the first 10 seconds of the launch.
