Trades Union Congress
Reform-led Durham council cut off funding to the annual Pride celebrations. So trade unions launched a fundraiser to save it, eventually raising more money than was cut. Which means this year's Pride will be bigger than ever. In the 1980s, the LGBT+ community raised thousands of pounds to help striking miners and their families. When we stick up for each other, we can achieve anything.

Conservative Business Secretary doesn't understand the law he voted against! If employers and employees are happy with their zero hours contract agreement then it continues unaffected. It's only where employees have been working regular hours for a sustained period but are unfairly stuck on a ZHC that they can move off it, to give them the predictability of hours that almost all other employees enjoy. Conservatives see "free markets" everywhere, even when monopsony or monopoly power exists. It's why they can't run the economy effectively, because they let power become entrenched and put ideology before promoting fair competition.
Andrew Griffith MP@griffitha

The cacophony of voices warning the government about the rising wave of youth unemployment continues with arguably the nations most successful retailer, Simon Wolfson of Next. So few MPs have a background in business they have little knowledge of the thin margins most businesses operate on or how the ‘zero hours’ contracts they demonise are usually a sensibly agreed compromise which meet employee and employer desire for flexibility.

34.8°C in the UK. In May. Warmest spring day ever. Beating the previous record by 2°C. Burning fossil fuels has made this heatwave hotter. True for the UK today, and everywhere else, all of the time.

@PolitlcsUK I’m sick of hearing misogyny & discrimination dismissed as ‘banter’ like some sort of ‘get out of jail free card’. It isn’t. It reinforces attitudes that hold women back. Together with Reform’s apparent intention to scrap the Equality Act & new workers’ rights this is alarming!

Update: A Reform UK spokesman says Kenyon's comments about women driving were "locker room banter made more than a decade ago" "We simply don't care about establishment hit jobs. We fully back Rob and are confident he will be an excellent MP for Makerfield"

@andywigmore @TiceRichard Complete gobbledegook. There’s a reason I haven’t seen a single person with tax expertise say this is a good idea. Left, Right, whatever - everyone knows it’s not. Identify specific errors or stop whining.

@DaveThroup I live a little way north of the marker by Ripon in N Yorks. On the drive my car said 33°C. I drove <5 miles to the garden centre, it dropped to 32.5°C. At the garden centre their thermostat read 32°C. I know many love this weather, but it’s not normal is it? Not in spring 😕

While waiting to see how much the May monthly temperature record has been shattered by, it’s worth looking at the extent of the heat. 30°C plus from North Yorkshire to the south coast and north wales to East Anglia. Remarkable.

Today has been the hottest day in May on record with Kew Gardens provisionally reaching 34.8°C - exceeding the previous highest May temperature in the UK by a full 2 degrees Celsius🌡️ This heat would be exceptional in the UK even in mid summer, let alone in May📈

Reform UK wants to abolish income tax on overtime. It sounds like a tax cut for hard work. Actually a tax cut for the word “overtime”. So little GDP impact & huge cost - we reckon £14bn not Reform's £5bn If you want to spent £5bn on tax cuts, we have ten better ways: 🧵

@Veritas_helper @DanNeidle As far as I can see, it would not benefit those who do not have access to over time, who have to work <40 hours for childcare/caring or who work multiple PT jobs totalling >40hrs. Also, interested to know how the lost revenue will be made up, what public services will be cut etc?

No tax on overtime is actually a very good idea to both reward people & get far more out of the working population. The government already taxes people on their normal work, why SHOULD they get a cut of people working overtime? Socialists expect as much tax take as possible, no, people should be able to keep extra they work over & above the normal week. Its about time we broke this attitude that the government always gets a cut.

Few chocolate bars are improved by being made into ice creams. The exception is a Snickers. A Snickers bar is nice. A Snickers Ice Cream is a slab of celestial joy

The Labour government says that food prices are too high and that food retailers should cap their prices. The Labour government is introducing a new £2bn tax increase on food retailers which will push up prices. Go figure!!!! thetimes.com/business/compa…
