Google isn’t just counting phones, it’s tracking movement patterns using the accelerometer inside you phone. People inside an apartment are mostly stationary or moving randomly within a small area. Their signals don’t follow the shape of the road, don’t move at consistent speeds, and don’t progress along a route. Cars on a road behave very differently. Multiple devices move in the same direction, at similar speeds, aligned to a mapped road segment. That pattern is what the system looks for. If 1000 people are sitting in a building next to a highway, their data just looks like a static cluster. It doesn’t match road geometry or traffic flow, so it gets ignored. On top of that, Google uses map-matching (snapping GPS points to actual roads), filters noise, and cross-checks with historical traffic patterns. So unless those 1000 people suddenly start moving together along the road, they won’t look like traffic. In short, it’s not about how many devices are nearby it’s about how they move.

Because your phone is basically a tiny traffic sensor. Google Maps doesn’t “see” traffic, it measures behavior. Thousands of phones on the same road continuously send anonymized GPS location and speed data. The system groups these signals by road segments and compares current speeds with historical patterns. When vehicles suddenly slow down, like from 60 km/h to 10 km/h, it flags congestion and turns the road red in real time. Then comes Waze. After Google acquired it, the real power was in combining data, not merging apps. Waze users actively report accidents, police, closures, and hazards, and that information flows directly into Google Maps. In return, Google’s massive data improves Waze’s routing and traffic predictions. So even if you never open Google Maps, your phone can still be contributing to traffic detection. You’re not just using the map. You are the map.

Longsor di Atas Turbin PLTA Sipulak Pakkat Membentuk Danau 70 Meter, Warga Diimbau Mengungsi. Pada Rabu, 3 Desember 2025 pukul 21:30, Manager PLTA Sipulak, Bapak Johan Siahaan, melaporkan terjadinya longsor besar di atas turbin PLTA berlokasi di Sipulak, Kabupaten Humbang Hasundutan, Sumatra Utara yang menyebabkan aliran Sungai Aek Sirahar tertutup total. Kondisi ini membuat air terus meluap dan membentuk danau sementara dengan ketinggian sekitar 70 meter. Tanah di area tersebut dikhawatirkan dapat jebol kapan saja, yang berpotensi memicu banjir bandang ke wilayah Barus, tepatnya Kecamatan Andam Dewi, Kabupaten Tapanuli Tengah. Pihak PLTA bersama Koramil melalui Sertu P. Simbolon telah menyampaikan imbauan kepada masyarakat di sepanjang aliran Sungai Aek Sirahar hingga Jembatan Husor untuk waspada dan segera mengungsi sementara demi menghindari potensi bahaya.
