Anonymous former Marvel Studios visual development team member on the recent layoffs
“This [visual development team] was something that Kevin [Feige] really wanted because, being a comic book fan, [he had] a particular vision of how things should be translated. This team was very specific, and we were often told that other departments don't like having this team on ... some sort of politics [were] going on ... Specifically costume design didn't like having us around"
The same source claims other departments would use AI in their work:
"I don't know if Marvel ever declared that or not, but a lot of them were using it ... Not the visual development team, but ... the art departments ... costume designers"
A separate anonymous laid off member doesn't think AI was a factor:
"I can tell you it is not because of AI because they are planning on rehiring but on a freelance basis"

What is the point of this? Of course, it can run faster! A car could also do the marathon in a 'world record time'. The entire point of winning a marathon is the achievement of rigorous training and personal sacrifice. What's next? An F1 race with autonomous cars? FFS 🙄

He has a lot of influence over young people and he’s spreading bad ideas. It’s best to listen to people who have industry experience.

If you needed a background car, it would actually be a lot easier to just poly model a background car. The effort it would take to process the ai mesh, split it out for materials, modify for possible variations etc would not be worth.

The idea that professional artists will be able to resist AI workflows forever - on someone else's dime - is quite frankly, foolish. Consider how likely you would be to hire a plumber at 10x the price because they refuse to use a snake camera? I still sketch for fun. I still model when I could download, for fun. But for work? I use whatever tool is best for the goals of the project, in the least time. It's always been this way. I get no pleasure from saying this. But refusing the more efficient tool rarely ends well for professionals. My first car model on the left from 2007. And a generated version on the right. For a hero asset, the left approach still wins. For a background asset, the right is perfectly fine. Use what works.

@matt_barrie My brother is a professional designer and was forced to use AI on a project. He said using AI doesn’t make sense because you burn through the budget generating useless iterations, then manually correcting them. He said it’s faster, better and cheaper to just do it all manually.

Andrew has always been a tech person. He was never an artist, his focus was always on the tech side of Blender.
While I do not agree with his viewpoint, it does not surprise me and if you watched his content from back in the day it should not surprise you either

Self-appointed "Blender Guru" is now advocating for AI generating assets in Meshy instead of actually using Blender, and saying artists will be replaced if they don't use generative AI. I can't believe I used to look up to you.

Another friend who got the axe. Ian Joyner - 6 years at Disney/Marvel, started as concept and character artist, became a supervisor. Here's some of his work. He's incredibly talented and, like the rest of the team, deserves better.

Can't tell you how cool this is - astronauts who are at the absolute bleeding edge of their field, but also adept photographers with an eye for great visual aesthetics. Art + Science FTW
