It’s 4:20 AM. Cold. But Berlin cold. A line of people stands outside a concrete factory building with no sign or explanation. Just a door and a guy with piercings on his face to pass by. Everyone’s dressed in black. Almost. Majority pretending they’re not trying. A guy in front of me is wearing a pink belt and has shiny sparkles on his face. Young. Optimistic. Solarpunk. Very 2021. The bouncer looks at him for half a second. “Not tonight.” The line shuffles forward. Ahead of me is someone in all black. No logos, brands, colors. Nothing much about attention seeking energy. Just standing there. I ask him, half joking: “So what’s the trick?” He doesn’t look at me. Just says: “There isn’t one.” Me nodding. Pretending. Then: “If you need it explained, you won’t enjoy it inside.” Now, it’s almost our turn. The bouncer looks at the guy in black. Nods. Waves him in. As he walks past, I notice a tiny logo on back of his shirt. A ring of separate shapes forming a quiet whole, in motion within a grayscale background. Almost invisible as it blends with the blacks. Next day it clicks when I learn it was Polkadot. Pink was the flyer. Black is the door. That’s Polkadot now. Berliner. Berghainer. Gone dark for roots & alignment first over growth and adoption. If you get in, you don’t need to be sold. If you don’t, the website will look empty. And you’ll call that a failure or a joke. And that’s the point. You’ll lose some casuals. But alignment starts by turning some off. A fair cliff to climb. Die or survive. Instead of tech fluffing, overexplaining, repeating others, begging for attention, playing the runner-catcher game, or pretending it’s something it’s not.
