thinking of all the recent scholarship and art projects about "China girls," for example... is there a digital equivalent? I mean, aside from dithering or rasterization, which I guess arguably themselves anticipate an interface with the human eye?

now for a VERY niche question: there's lots of scholarship (e.g. Cubitt's Practice of Light) about how digital images machine vision are divorced from the human eye. but who out there is tackling how these ARE calibrated for human perception (a la Jonathan Sterne on sound)?
