Why is it so hard to become a reserve currency? Most countries don’t make it. Get stuck with low reputation. China is opening up its bond market, in part to generate immediate liquidity for an alternative payment system (fear of sanctions), in part to build reputation as a resilient market with foreign investors with an eye to a future bigger role for its bonds in international markets. it’s a slow and haphazard process with good reasons to be skeptical about probability of success.
