A picture speaks a thousand words. There was an orange weather warning issued for Dublin since yesterday. We prepared ourselves as best we knew what was ahead of us but not realising what we were going to be faced with. This is a harrowing story of the man who lost his shoes. We’re not going to go into detail about where his shoes went or what happened. But sitting outside the GPO barefoot in the cold, wet weather with no shoes on, we’re told by the government that there’s no need for soup runs. That man’s lifeline tonight and to receive a pair of shoes was through a soup run. It was a soup run standing in the weather outside the GPO, it was a soup run still running despite the orange weather alert. Some of our team members were able to go into Penneys and get dry socks and shoes for that man - to give him dignity and for him to be able to walk the rest of the night with a pair of shoes on his feet. We see harrowing stories like this week in and week out and I’m sure that many of the other soup runs could write a book on the heartbreak and stories that they see. Tonight we had about 400 meals and every single one of them was gone. Our table and our van were laden with food and every single thing was gone. We came prepared with tents, sleeping bags, hats, gloves, scarves and hygiene bags and everything was cleared out. If you could visualise a long transit van that was packed up to the brim - we started at 18.30 and by 20.00 everything was gone. People queued quietly right around into Henry Street where the cold and rain belting on their faces and their clothes. They came to our soup run in the queue soaked to the skin. We wish we were able to help every single person in the queue tonight - to hand out umbrellas or dry clothes - but we couldn’t. We had to pick and choose who to help based on urgency and that’s the reality of all soup runs in Dublin. If you would like to help us or donate, please visit msoe.ie/donate/.

Tonight is St Stephen’s night. We actually planned to take the night off, but as a group, we decided it was important to go ahead with it. We took just under 200 hot meals tonight, along with tea, coffee, fruit, and vegetables. We didn’t think there would be many people, but within 45 minutes, we were completely cleared out. It was amazing to see how happy people were to see us. Many were queuing, hoping we would be there, and when they saw us arrive in our van, they were so appreciative. Several said they didn’t think they’d get a hot meal tonight. We are so grateful for everyone who supports us. Your help allows us to make even a small difference for those who really need it. Tonight, while the rest of Ireland was celebrating Halloween and kids were busy with "trick or treat," we were heartbroken to see so many children at our soup run. Their families simply couldn't afford to take them out with costumes. Although we had prepared some special goodies and sweets for them, the sadness of that reality was still deeply felt. The day in Dublin started with heavy rain, meaning one thing: we came strongly prepared. We knew that many of our rough sleepers would be drenched to the core. We distributed a large amount of hats, scarves, gloves, sleeping bags and tents. As expected, we also gave out vast stocks of dry clothing: tracksuit bottoms, vests, clean underwear, and t-shirts. Meeting this basic need is crucial every single week. Week in, week out, we see the varied, complex challenges that face people who come to us. People from all walks of life from children, rough sleepers, elderly to individuals stuck in hotel accommodation, and those who need nothing more than a listening ear. After more than a decade, the necessity of maintaining this soup run is sadly confirmed. While we hope and pray for the day we can fold our table for good, the need continues to grow. We typically aim to serve 400 to 450 hot meals. This week, however, we fell just short of 400. We ran out of hot food for several people and it breaks our hearts every time that happens. If you would like to sponsor the hot meals it costs €3.50 per meal, please click the donate button (and refer to your contribution as "hot meal") or visit: msoe.ie/donate/ Whether you contribute weekly, monthly, or occasionally, your support makes a tangible difference in the lives of those we serve. To all our incredible supporters—thank you. Your continued encouragement is what keeps us on this path.

This evening, our team served 475 hot meals to those in need on the streets of Dublin. 💛 During Child Poverty Week, what struck us most was the presence of children at our Soup Run. Seeing little ones in the queue for food is a heartbreaking reminder that child poverty is not a distant issue — it is happening here, in Ireland, today. No child should go to bed hungry, yet many families are facing daily struggles to provide the basics. We are truly grateful to our volunteers and supporters who help us continue this work. Your compassion ensures that vulnerable families and individuals do not feel forgotten. As the need grows, we urge everyone who can to support — through donations, volunteering, or simply raising awareness. Every small act of kindness helps us stand together against poverty and hunger. 📍 Join us, support us, or donate to our cause. Together, we can bring hope, dignity, and care to those most in need. msoe.ie/donate/

Tonight we had a total of 500 meals of which every single one was given out. We were also inundated with enough ambient foods such as crisps, chocolates, pastas, and more that we thought we would have to keep some for the next week but again, every single item was given out. As the extreme heat continues, our demand for sleeping bags, socks, and undergarments rises as people want to be able to live through the heat as comfortably as possible. Additionally, we've seen a rise in both young children and elderly in our queues each week. As a result, we try to look out and care for them due to their vulnerability. Unfortunately, this evening we had a young girl who was in a very difficult state looking for toiletries and clothes. Having access to no other clothes other than the ones she was wearing, we quickly helped and supplied her with new clothes, other necessities, and her food. Again, we'd like to give a huge shoutout this week to Kaian our newly joined barber who put in so much effort in helping the homeless get a boost of self worth. By being able to sit down and get a haircut, we feel grateful that we can at least bring back some sense of ease for them and allow them in even small ways, to feel good about themselves. Every week we realise that despite all of our efforts, we are absolutely indebted and reliant on the kindess and support of the public. Without your help, we would not be able to provide our services each week, and improve our ability to help as many people as possible. Please don't hesitate to donate, so we can continue our work and stay committed to making a difference. msoe.ie/donate/

In 1990 I read Under the Hawthorn Tree, a profound read A novel about experiences of famine in Irl, I imagined the children eating eating barks of trees. Wondered what life was like for my people. Today children in Gaza are eating grass, they are dying from an enforced hunger.

Tonight was one of those nights where we were left speechless. Six 6-foot tables that were filled with food were emptied after 45 minutes. We handed out 260 meals and still had around fifty people without food. This is the second week that this has happened and we don’t understand what’s going on. There’s been a huge increase in our soup run and we need to start thinking strategically for future soup runs. It is absolutely heartbreaking for someone to be at the end of the queue and know that there’s not a hot meal for that person. For the people that were left, we handed out fruit and goodies but that was still not a proper meal. Tonight we have no words, we feel defeated. We need to plan properly for next week to ensure that we have enough meals - this week 300 was not enough. If you would like to sponsor a hot meal, it’s €3 per person. If any restaurants would like to sponsor hot meals, please contact us. If you would like to help us or donate, please visit msoe.ie/donate/.
