I just thought of a very good "no sound on Linux" joke, but then I realized that I didn't have any sound-related issues on Linux in many years at this point. Or rather ever since PipeWire became mainstream. When was the last time you had sound issues on Linux? The joke was "on Linux, nobody can hear you scream" btw, but typing it out now it's kinda cringe ngl.

@TheGingerBill I agree with that (that what I meant by "works both ways") vim motions are not making people faster, they just force users to learn them, so imho it's a placebo effect. If people will try to learn any editor result will be the same, only concept of editing will be different

@_dyuz Not the argument I was trying to make. I am saying that people saying Vim Motions are faster than other approaches in editors is not true. The point is to become proficient in the tools that you use and you'll notice how that is not isolated to Vim.

I honestly believe that Vim Motions don't actually make you faster at using a text editor, and a well implemented multiple-cursor system + typical modifier keys are actually much faster in practice. Evidence: watch me program on streams with Sublime Text and judge for yourself.

@TheGingerBill "Choice without a standard is not a freedom" - what? Standard is a result of evolution of many choices (or just dictator's choice), but not a criteria of freedom

To summarize: Choice without a standard is not freedom. Freedom leads to choice. Standardization is not trying to get people to adhere to a document, it's the process of seeing what it is standard. Linux has no standard, meaning you have no freedom to diverge from it.

The main issue with the general Linux experience (not the kernel) is a simple but subtle problem: choice. People think choice is "freedom", but the direction of causality is backwards. Just having choice is not freedom. However, "freedom" leads to choice.

The more I develop programming languages the more I realize that there is not that much difference between interpreted and compiled languages. Compilation is just a form of interpretation. Lisp was thinking in the right direction. But nobody so far managed to close the gap.
