When I first read A Brief History of Seven Killings by @MarlonJames5 I had never seen anyone marry history, politics and character like he had. In my own writing I wanted to capture the essence of Venezuela, like he had done with Jamaica. To have this on my book now means so much

it was fun to get back out on the competition mats this weekend. one thing Jiu Jitsu really hammers home is how different of a skillset these two things are: * being good at something * being good at doing it in a high pressure setting competing itself is a skill. it really takes you out of your comfort zone when you have a stranger across the mat who is going to try their absolute hardest to beat you. the mindset aspect of Jiu Jitsu competition is a totally different beast from learning techniques in training. there are a ton of tactical and strategy considerations unique to a tournament. and the last 10% of intensity your competition opponents put into making sure your moves don't work is really difficult to simulate in even a very tough training environment. it was very cool to randomly go up against someone wearing our gear, makes for some sick brand photos win or lose!
