since it's way easier to go viral on Instagram, I've seen:
- UGC creators green-screening other creators from their programs and pretending it's sauce
- creators fake screen recording YouTube and having the UGC video inside the "ad"

🚨DARK SAUCE ALERT (2026 edition) 🚨
mobile app makers really out here running some of the darkest patterns in 2026 and still acting like ethical geniuses here are the darkest ones that still print stupid money until the refunds and 1 star reviews hit.
18 dark patterns to avoid doing (please).
doing them lead to insta loss of aura.
1 - roach motel subscriptions — dead easy to sign up, literal maze to cancel. they hide the button so deep you need a map and a prayer
2 - sneaky auto renewals with zero real disclosure.
one click and boom youre billed for a year while you thought it was weekly
3 - no reminder push before trial ends.
surprise your card just got hit and now you're too lazy to fight it
4 - confirm shaming on cancel flows like “no thanks i hate money” or “i dont want to improve my life anymore”
5 - hidden drip pricing that only appears at the very last checkout screen
6 - prechecked boxes for extra subscriptions data sharing or newsletters during onboarding
7 - forcing a quick 15 minute zoom call before they let you cancel. this one is 100 percent dark pattern and we all know it
8 - fake scarcity and urgency timers that refresh every few minutes like clockwork
9 - disguised ads and native promos that look exactly like core app content
10 - endless nagging popups for 5 star reviews that guilt you until you give in or rage quit
11 - aggressive notification spam and tricky permission walls that trick you into enabling everything
12 - keeping cancelled users in your retained metrics during grace periods so the dashboard still looks pretty while reality burns
13 - basket sneaking — automatically adding extra items or subscriptions to your cart without you touching anything
14 - bait and switch — promising one thing in the ad then delivering something completely different once youre in
15 - subscription traps that turn a supposed one time purchase into recurring billing
16 - infinite scroll designed to keep you doomscrolling and addicted as long as possible
17 - tiny gray text buried deep for manage preferences or cancel while the big blue button says accept all
18 - misleading monthly pricing when its actually billed yearly upfront
please note that the "hard paywall" isn't in the list because it's NOT a dark pattern at all.
most things we buy in the real world are behind a hard paywall.
you wouldn't open a gallon of milk to taste it at the grocery store before buying it.
