yeah. ideal world, i'd just be doing my thing, somewhere im not getting abused, cranking out all kinds of FOSS in every niche and building robots and model railways for the rest of my life... i just really like this shit. but, instead i gotta be a social media personality on 20 platforms, send hundreds of resumes, be a thought leader, and ten different other things at once, and still get no work... it's just insane, tbh. let me do what im good at and allow me to survive in return, how hard is that?

Software engineering is a great little insight into how capitalism works more broadly in that developers have spent the last 50 years making new tools that everybody else has to learn, inventing new libraries, working on projects that threaten to make everybody else's engineering skills obsolete, and this all culminates in AI tools that some people think will totally eliminate the profession. And so it's natural to ask yourself, "why?" Why would they do this? Why would an industry make the tools to make themselves obsolete? There's a simple answer: it's because people have *individual* incentives that override the collective incentives. Software engineers are in *competition* with each other. They aren't a single, coherent, cooperative entity. And it's the individual incentives that are operative. This is true all throughout capitalism. Many socialist arguments are built on an inability to understand this core fact.

@Brennan_Lup been building a more open Siri AI (and the infra needed for that) since before Siri AI got announced. and the majority of the good agent tooling for apple platform development. and the only codex app-server sdk on macOS (pack-in UI layer is mid-rework rn, tho)

@bluewmist given the amount of problems i solve while coding by just randomly side-tracking to sing whatever's playing in the background, and then *boom* answer appears in my head, im convinced that constant music/art/dance/movement is required for brain function. so yeah, just human things

pretty shitty how baseline human activities like singing, dancing and making art got turned into skills instead of being seen as behaviors so now it's like 'the point of doing them is to get good at them' and not 'this is a thing humans do, the way birds sing and bees make hives.

at this point i think morality should be a private matter between you and your family every time i see it made part of a public identity (like a company's mission) it corrupts everyone involved and they justify increasingly worse behavior
