Women's History Month is coming to an end but that doesn't mean we will stop celebrating! Generation Young Black Hollywood celebrates actress and singer Denée Benton. “I hope I’m a part of us continuing to have space to do whatever the fuck we want artistically!”

Something to be said about authors that write darkskin characters have a full understanding of the colorism and mistreatment they face then cast a lightskin person for the movie adaptations

@NihilJoker @chaoticblkgirl We are doing our very best in an industry that does not want us. No matter what we do, whether it be have the right hair, right talent, the right look- the goal post will shift. All we can do is to show up & try. It’s not about aesthetics it’s encouraging the girls to keep trying.

@NihilJoker @chaoticblkgirl I absolutely respect that. And I appreciate the effort being made to bring awareness to the very blatant erasure of a specific group. However the take just does not reflect the lived reality. Black girls are constantly auditioning with our own hair or wigs that reflect such.

This take completely ignores the real & traumatic damage us black girls face with our natural hair when we arrive on any set in this industry. Until one has experienced the trauma of losing 4in of hair trying to live our dreams-it’s best not to speak on how we manage our reality.

I think another reason why black girls aren’t getting cast as much as biracial girls is because a lot of directors are looking for curly hair aesthetic that’s natural. The braids, super edges, constant straight hair is likely a detriment in auditions

Also I don’t know a single black girl who doesn’t also audition with our natural styles. Whether that be our own 4c fro’s or wigs that mimic them. We’re not being erased because of our hair…

Gen YBH Women’s History Month Spotlight: GRACE DUAH “I hope that the stories and characters I portray can provide a safe space for others, as those of the legends before me provided for myself and other Black women and girls. I want Black girls and women, especially darker-skinned Black girls, to be able to look at my work and be reminded that our value and beauty are insurmountable. There is no box capable of fitting everything we have to offer, and we can never be erased. I stand where I stand because of the incredible work of all the black women who broke down doors before me and never took no for an answer. Thus I hope my work one day will lead to even more black women and girls standing with us in defiance of everyone whoever doubted us.”

Joy Sunday (Wednesday) is a lead in the new HBO dark comedy series DTF St. Louis. Her character’s name is Jodie Plumb. The show premieres March 1. She adds that the show is “a very different lane” for her, but the opportunity to stretch her skills as an actor built her confidence and boosted her love for the craft.

I wanted to celebrate some of the young Black women who made television unforgettable. Their presence left a mark that will never fade & remind us why representation is so important in media. #BlackWomen
