@_m1kc @rovarma that's even worse cause not all distros are Debian based which means that if you aren't on a Debian system you need to download targz and there's no instructions as to what to do with it

This is 100% true, but Linux devs were and are in denial about this. There’s a reason the install page for every cross platform app looks like * Download Windows installer * Download OSX package * Click here for Linux install instructions that may or may not work on your distro
gingerBill@TheGingerBill

I don't know if a lot of people have thought why this happened. To make Linux viable for the layman, Valve had to make Proton (derived from Wine) so that Win32 API became the first and only stable ABI on Linux. Why did Linux Distro devs not care about stable ABI historically?

@Jonathan_Blow @etscrivner What's wrong about exposing kernel APIs as files? You seem to assume that those need to be text files but that's not actually true, they can be binary, or JSON, or whatever. Reading & writing these virtual files is also cheap, everything happens in the kernel.

"Everything is a file" was probably a good idea in 1975 before lots of other things about programming got figured out. Now, if you actually want to write robust systems instead of hacky shell scripts, it is obviously a huge negative. Just give me an API that returns the data, and if someone wants to write a piece of crap shell script, you can have a dynamic library that exposes these APIs as command-line parameters.

@valigo Can go far with that logic. Why have ELF executables when all the games target PE? Why have /path/to/file when they expect C:\path\to\file? Why have Linux syscall format when they expect NT? This is basically ReactOS. Not a bad system, but it has none of Linux's unique strengths.

In reality, both X11 and Wayland are a lost cause. Real winner on Linux desktop is win32, because all games target in. I think Mesa should just standardize Wine platform GPU context and make DirectX drivers, and Wine should ship a real desktop instead of being a layer on top of Wayland/X11. X11 had 40 years, Wayland had 20 years. I think it's time to take an L and focus on destroying Microsoft on its own playing field.

Google just got a patent that could change how websites show up in search creating its own AI version of a company’s page. If Google sees that the real website isn’t working well it can offer a link to this custom AI-made page instead. The AI page takes the company’s real content but rebuilds it and makes everything fit you perfectly, using your search, past searches, location, and what you seem to like. For anyone who runs a website, This patent is one sign of what’s coming.

@GameSpot That's kinda sad honestly. Split Fiction was their most ambitious project, and you can tell how much effort did they put into each level.

The reason software eats RAM is the same reason factories used to dump chemicals in rivers. The cost is externalized. Every mass of inference compute shows up on an engineering manager's AWS bill, broken down to the cent, reviewed quarterly. Every mass of RAM consumed on YOUR machine shows up nowhere in anyone's budget. Chrome could cut memory usage by 60% tomorrow and Google's revenue wouldn't move a single basis point. Docker's 2GB idle footprint costs Docker Inc. exactly $0. Electron's 500MB todo list costs the Electron team exactly $0. The user paid for the RAM. The user pays the electricity. The user deals with the fan noise. The company ships faster because they chose the laziest possible runtime. The token-optimization obsession makes this even clearer. Companies optimize inference cost because inference cost hits their margins. They'll spend six months shaving 200ms off a model response. They won't spend six days reducing a desktop client's memory footprint because that memory belongs to someone else's hardware. This is why the 16GB vs 32GB debate is a trap. You're asking consumers to buy more expensive hardware to subsidize the software industry's refusal to optimize for a resource they never have to pay for. The market will never fix this on its own. The people writing the checks and the people running out of RAM are on opposite sides of the transaction.
Chayenne Zhao@GenAI_is_real

unpopular opinion: 16GB is plenty if software engineers actually cared about memory efficiency. chrome eating 4GB for 12 tabs is not a hardware problem its a software disgrace. docker consuming 2GB idle is not a feature its laziness. we live in an era where people optimize every single token to save $0.001 on API costs but happily ship electron apps that eat 500MB to display a todo list. if the industry treated RAM the way we treat inference compute - obsessively measuring every byte - 16GB would feel luxurious. the hardware isnt the problem, the software is @adxtyahq

Sony has published a patent for dynamically adjusting (nerfing or buffing) players in multiplayer sessions to balance cross-platform like console, PC, and mobile. The technology would monitor hardware, input methods, and skill levels in real time Then nerf or buff players, such as by reducing speed or reaction times for console and PC users to balance disadvantages faced by mobile players using touch controls.

@aramh WebP is actually S-tier. It offers better compression than JPEG, high quality WebP looks almost like a PNG in many cases while being 20x smaller, it's supported by every modern browser, and even desktop software support is almost problem-free at this point. Real GOAT.

For anybody saying "Just use Linux", you need to realise that Linux is worse than Windows. Windows has all the bloat, and while you can have Linux without any of that you still don't have tools like Remedybg, RAD Debugger and Super Luminal. Once you have such tools, then Linux is a suitable app development environment. But _it is still trash_ because of the whole Linux model of you needing to compile everything. The fact that you cannot run an app built using a newer version of glibc is an insane decision. I shouldn't have to upgrade my whole machine in order to run something built on a newer version. I shouldn't be worried that an upgrade will break my machine. I shouldn't be forced to compile things from scratch to work on my machine. I shouldn't be forced to install N packages, I just want self contained binaries I can just download and run. I shouldn't be forced to develop with an old distro to have "max glibc compatibility". I shouldn't have to worry about X11 / Wayland / Window Managers. I shouldn't have to worry about asking the user to select a folder, display a dialog or show notifications. Linux is such a huge waste of potential, if they got their shit together they would completely obliterate Windows. I first got into Linux in 2000, and even back then there was this "it will take over Windows any time now!". It's been _26 years_! The same way I'd pay quite a lot for Windows without any bloat, I'd be willing to pay for a distro that gives me all this.

@jackie_codes 0,2% isn't a statistically significant difference, especially with a sample of ~3000 views. This test is just telling you that both thumbnails perform about the same.

@5ro4 Sorry to hear that! This message usually indicates a driver problem, but it's really hard to say without looking. Better luck next time! (Maybe try another distro, might randomly fix things)

I installed Linux Mint. Spent a couple of days tinkering to get some Windows functionality such as being able to configure my mouse or having Super + V bring up the clipboard history. The 3rd day I did some work, then attempted to play indie games on stream and the dream died.
