@allenholub @venkat_s Before pandemic, several years ago, I had to physically go to the bank as a consultant. And it is a bank from Italy, not from undeveloped country. They didn’t even allow VPN, let alone cloud ☁️. Devops were using on prem products instead SaaS etc. Upgrades once in 2-3 hears.

@_nemke_ @venkat_s If resources are limited, cloud hosting is _much_ cheaper. It's only an issue if you have very high volume.

I have a kind request to programmers: Rather than reporting "something went wrong" could you please tell the user the real damn issue so they can more intelligently decide the next step. I do appreciate that you're sorry. Thank you.

@allenholub @venkat_s Just try to convince some governments or banks to use cloud hosting. Sometimes it’s political decision and your hands are tied. There is 195 countries in the world, each having their specific politics and development level.

@allenholub @venkat_s So, the system can have unpredictable exception which should not be thrown in users face. If the user can do something about specific exception, then yes, show the specific message.

@allenholub @venkat_s This world is diverse in nature. Not every business is Netflix. Resources are limited, people, money, hardware. Try to build something when there are many restrictions. Try to deploy system every week in Fiji from Europe. It is easy when you have unlimited resources like FB does.

@allenholub @venkat_s Azure SLA goes from 99.9-99.99 uptime which is 8,76h downtime during year. And I witnessed multiple downtimes from azure services. My point was not about cloud, but exceptions from the regular situations.

@_nemke_ @venkat_s You are using a 3rd party system to do something. ISTM, you should be able to detect whether you can actually do that thing and respond accordingly. Earthquakes and janitors are solved with cloud hosting. These are not insurmountable problems.

@allenholub @venkat_s What if there is issue with 3rd party system, interservice connection, network issue, earthquake or cleaning lady unplugged server cable (which btw is real story one colleague told me)

@_nemke_ @venkat_s If you have to study a stack trace to find out what the problem is, your code has significant quality problems. Not enough error checking, for example. Throwing a generic exception that doesn't identify the problem is just sloppy programming.

@allenholub @venkat_s It’s nice in the theory and books, but not in the practice. Having prejudice about one’s code quality and not knowing the right context is something we can all do. Hey let’s blame developers for exception which probably fall back from specific to generic.
