Focus on @Makerere Student Hunger. While the coffee issue is an important one. While the Buganda tribal issue is an important one. And while the truck fire is an important one as well. The most important story of the day is the crisis of student starvation at the leading university in the region. I have been talking about this issue for sometime. As a Pastor I have seen how the abandonment of the university from the student welfare and meals due to world bank policy of privatization circa 2006 has led to the current crisis. The Makerere which many of us remember in our days as students with our guild presido of @norbertmao is no longer. As the Baganda say, tukuma lubugo Lubaale mubbe. We are an apparition of the past. A visit to Mitchell hall dining hall and kitchen tells the sad story. The dining hall is now a class room. The kitchen which used to serve meals is now a dilapidated cobweb covered kitchen. The stoves are like museum pieces. The dining which used to provide breakfast , lunch and supper is no longer. The fellowship and unity which used to be around the dining room is no longer. Strangely the dining is now a class. The hundreds of students who come look for toilets which were never planned for the purpose. Their is a mixture of noise of class room, and the students of Mitchell just being students. But much more is the reality of student hunger. This is driving crisis of acadamic failure, drugs, prostitution, illness and many more. A recent study show that 91% of the students at @Makerere don t eat enough food See this link researchgate.net/publication/38… Its time to stop the pretense. We are not doing our young people right. There is a food crisis at Makerere and we need to do something about it.
