Say No To BBL is trending because Nigerians are campaigning against body enhancement, after Elena’s death. Elena died at Cynosure Hospital attempting a second round of BBL. Her family asked her to remove the first one. While two hospitals advised her against adding another one, as her body was tight and there was no space for another BBL. That if she proceeds, chance of getting infected is high. But she found a hospital willing to give her what she wanted. As predicted, it got infected and she died late last week. As a doctor, I'll explain the genetics of sickle cell trait simply. The hemoglobin gene has alleles: A (normal) and S (sickle). AA means two normal alleles. If both parents are truly AA, they can only pass A alleles, so all children should be AA. An AS child would require one S allele, which neither parent has. Possible reasons: - Lab error in genotyping (common—suggest retesting all three). - Rare de novo mutation (extremely unlikely). - Non-biological paternity (sensitive, but possible). Consult a geneticist for accurate testing and counseling.
