HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME I think that’s the biggest gift 28 gave me. I could’ve posted the typical insta caption like, “We did it Joe!!!!!!!!!!!!!” and left it there but this moment deserves MORE than that. Some of you know me as Mimi. Others know me as Minou. This photo is about Minou. Minou is the daughter of two incredible Congolese parents, Myriam and Dede. Both left the DRC and came to this country I now call home, England. Neither of them spoke a word of English. But they had courage (remember this) My dad made one of the biggest decisions of his life without the blessing of his own father. He arrived here, learnt a new language, and went on to earn a uni degree. My mum came with the support of her family, who all contributed so she and my Auntie Pauline could build a new life here. She became not only a mother to me, but someone who constantly carried her family while balancing work and responsibility....SUPERHUMAN BTW Then came me. I went to school, got two degrees, and then decided I wanted a career that looked nothingggggg like what I’d studied. It took courage. My dad didn’t understand it. My mum quietly supported me where she could. Funny how history repeats itself lmaooooooo The greatest thing my parents passed down to me wasn’t money or status It was courage (BOOM, come on storytelling) It took courage to start blogging with no money, just a love for music (10 years next year ahhhhh) It took courage to press publish when friends and family were watching.... eish I’m shyyy It took courage to walk into rooms where I was often one of the only young Black women It took courage to spend my first real freelance cheque moving out and building a life for myself. It took courage to become a full time creative. It took courage to admit freelancing alone wasn’t sustainable. It took courage to sign up for uc. It took courage to apply for jobs. It took courage to start again. And it took courage to eventually walk into Ogilvy, the biggest advertising agency in the world, as a Creative Strategist btwwww But courage isn’t just about career moments. It’s understanding the freelancer waiting for invoices to be paid. It’s knowing what it’s like to wake up thinking about money before you’ve even brushed your teeth. It’s balancing work and life. It’s rolling your eyes when another Teams notification comes through. It’s smiling through industry events when you’re exhausted. It’s reading comments about yourself. It’s doomscrolling. It’s questioning yourself. That’s perspective. This time last year, I was unemployed. Yes, I was interviewing Teyana, Ciara, Snoop to Will Smith. Yes, Mimi The Music Blogger was bringing in work. But I needed stabilityyyyyyy. I was YEARNING it One year later… Life feels more grounded. I’ve worked on campaigns that genuinely show up in culture. I’ve helped shape partnerships like Aveeno x Recessland. I’ve experienced the BRIT Awards from the brand side with Neutrogena. I’ve found a home on Substack. I’ve mentored at SXSW London. And today… I’m honoured to be recognised as one of the HSBC UK x UK Black Business Show Top 25 Black Entrepreneurs to Watch 2026. All within a year. If you’d told the version of me on Uc that this would happen, she probably would’ve laughed LOL The real achievement wasn’t the award. The real achievement was showing up anyway. Showing up when I didn’t have certainty. Showing up when nobody was clapping. Showing up because I believed courage would eventually meet opportunity. So thank you, Mum and Dad. For passing down something far more valuable than success. You passed down courage. And that has changed my life. Perspective. Happy 29th birthday to me 🎈
