I put in a lot of time and effort into the aesthetics of my blog until I was happy with it I am not a particularly artistically talented person, but I am perseverent When I have more time in the future, I will write some new posts

Anyway, I didn’t mean to be confrontational about this I agree having good grades or being smart is not enough on its own Agency is equally or more important I was just doing everything I could to maximize my chances of success, scholarships helped me pay for school, degree helped me with the US visa, and I learned a lot of good stuff (helped me work on GPS, sensor fusion algorithms, helped me get into the AI field professionally) etc etc

I built my own bitcoin mining rig when I was in highschool in 2013 (see pic), in those days I also hosted my own web server on a broken laptop (which my friends used to bypass the school firewall by ssh tunneling), I taught myself how to code as I didn’t study CS, I built/building impliedopen.com ccmux.ai and more (in stealth), check out some other things I’ve built on blog.skz.dev. I also have a lot of different experience, I’ve lived in 3 different countries, moved alone at 22 to the US, in college before my internships I was a sales associate at Calvin Klein, I’ve slaughtered 40 chickens by hand with a knife, I’m scuba certified, ASA sailing cerfified (just sailed around the Caribbean last month), motorcycle licensed, spent last December living in Taiwan by myself. I love watches too, but so far the only building on that front I’ve done is modding my own Casioaks It’s true a lot of people lack agency but I’m not sure about the correlation with grades. Also, if you are the most experienced person you know, elevate your friend group

4.0 GPA requires so much sacrifice for very little tangible output. Past 10+ years I've been severely underperforming when it comes to grades, but I never knew a single person IRL that had more experience than me. Started with Steam CSGO low float skins bot snipers, was really into crypto, I remember being the only guy into configs and vim, because the thing was very niche that many years ago, I was 15 so I wasn't around programming people, I started making my own games/apps, ultimately I decided on web-backend, just to land my first job as a frontend engineer. People with 4.0 didn't even know how to use git in production properly (group project were my own personal hell in uni). All this to say, 4.0 people generally only cared about grades and everything else, any practical knowledge or whatnot fell short, was borderline embarrassing. After kinda dropping out of CS, I started working as an arborist for a year, toughest job I ever had, but I had so much fun. Finished my degree and NOW, I'm making goddamn watches. I hate using the word agency, but 4.0 people are lacking it so fucking much. They just don't step out of line, and is the reason why they won't make it.

> bro applied to +200 internships > got 1 unpaid offer, did it for 7 months > is graduating with a 4.0 GPA > did full stack large-scale web dev > did research in an AI lab HE CANNOT GET A JOB. “even if I did get a job I’d be wrangling with AI 1-2 years until you have AIs that can wrangle themselves and I’m not even useful anymore.”

@beffjezos Use `caffeinate`, it's a built-in utility that ships with MacOS, the interface is easier to use, and it isn't permanent like pmset so you don't nuke your battery

PS. As for NAND, I’m a bit skeptical. Samsung recently decided to build a new NAND fab at P5. There are also widespread rumors that even SK hynix may open a new NAND fab in China.

People who think the DRAM supercycle will end in 1H next year don't know what they're talking about. The GB200 uses 17TB of SOCAMM2, but the VR200 uses over 50TB of SOCAMM2. That alone has NVIDIA hoovering up so much LPDDR5X that even smartphone OEMs are panic-buying — and do you know how much SOCAMM goes into the VR300? 220TB. A lot of people have only been focused on the VR300's 1TB of HBM4E, but you need to look at the SOCAMM too. Once NVIDIA starts consuming 220TB of SOCAMM, the LPDDR shortage could become so severe that it reaches a point where OEMs can't build smartphones even if they want to.

@MinuteofZombie What’s interesting is that this math itself doesn’t imply or suggest anything about wave function collapse. That’s a choice of interpretation, when trying to understand what these equations mean in the real world. It’s philosophical.

@MIT_CSAIL A lot more than that, for example it's also what allows us to look at JPEGs (discrete cosine transform, DCT) and get packets over the internet (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, OFDM) Thanks Fourier

The U.S. military is always terrified that the GPS system (which is 12K miles away) can be jammed/spoofed. Interestingly, researchers at Ohio State University discovered they could use Starlink’s signals as a stealth navigation system. Cos Starlink satellites are in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) & fly so fast, their doppler shift is incredibly predictable. By just listening to the pings w/o even having an account, a receiver can calculate its position on Earth within 7.7 meters. This effectively creates a backup GPS that is almost impossible to jam cos there are 1000s of transmitters instead of just 31.
Sawyer Merritt@SawyerMerritt

NEWS: Globe Telecom said it has successfully tested Starlink’s Mobile service in the Philippines, allowing phones to connect in areas with no signal. The pilot was done in Rizal, Batangas, and Bataan, where users were able to send messages, make calls, and use data even without nearby cell towers. "This will be our lifeline, especially during disasters and our complementary coverage in areas where terrestrial network is not available," said Joel Agustin, Senior Vice President for Service Planning and Engineering at Globe. "The service will also address the connectivity requirements of GIDA (Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas) communities and strengthen coverage across the country's territorial boundaries," he added.

@levelsio I asked my doctor for some additional blood tests because of a family history of thyroid disorders, he said sure, and I’ll order an ultrasound too (didn’t ask for it), even though I had no symptoms The ultrasound was how I found out I had cancer

I was never able to do blood tests when I asked for it in Netherlands Doctor asked "why? you're not sick?" Then I tried in Portugal (at Germano de Sousa) but they never picked up the phone or when they did were so slow and unhelpful I gave up, they also require a doctor prescription btw The first place I could get my blood tested was Thailand in 2018, I just walked into Bumrungrad and asked for it, amazing experience Last few years we just fly to Brazil and do it here, the nurse comes to your home/hotel at 8am and takes your blood, same or next day results online I find it funny I keep having to fly out of Western Europe to do blood tests, they make it impossibly hard to do them Which is retarded

I was feeling unwell in the airport, I used Google Translate to ask some staff where the pharmacy was or if they had a doctor nearby and they just called over the airport paramedics. I threw up in a trash can in front of them and they immediately IV’d me AFAIK the IV had electrolytes and vitamins and maybe some sort of food poisoning medicine Definitely get some medical help if you can
