NDLEA uncovers cocaine in palm kernel oil cans, arrests kingpin in Lagos By Zagazola Makama Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have dismantled a major drug trafficking syndicate, intercepting cocaine consignments concealed in tins of palm kernel extract bound for the United Kingdom and arresting the kingpin in Lagos. The Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, said in a statement on Sunday that the intelligence-led operation, which lasted three weeks, led to the unraveling of the syndicate’s structure and the arrest of key members. Babafemi said the breakthrough began on March 11, when NDLEA officers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, intercepted 3.10 kilograms of cocaine at the export shed. “The illicit substance was meticulously concealed in tins of palm kernel extract intended for shipment to the UK,” he said. He added that two suspects, Idris Olayiwola Amoo and Akinlami Akinsoji Adedoyin, who were handling the consignment, were arrested on the spot. According to him, a follow-up sting operation conducted on April 2 led to the arrest of the sender, Ezemuwo Joel, who operated under a false identity. “His arrest provided investigators with critical leads that resulted in the apprehension of the syndicate’s kingpin, a 52-year-old suspect identified as King Arinze, at his hideout in Isolo, Lagos,” Babafemi said.

President Tinubu Approves ₦3.3 Trillion Payment Plan to Clear Power Sector Legacy Debts and Restore Reliable Electricity President Bola Tinubu has given the green light to a ₦3.3 trillion payment plan designed to finally settle long-standing debts in Nigeria’s power sector, a move officials say will bring much-needed stability to electricity supply across the country. The approval follows a comprehensive verification of legacy debts that have plagued the sector for over a decade. The debts accumulated between February 2015 and March 2025. After detailed review, ₦3.3 trillion was agreed upon as the full and final settlement amount. Implementation of the Presidential Power Sector Financial Reforms Programme has already begun. Fifteen power plants have signed settlement agreements worth ₦2.3 trillion. The Federal Government has raised ₦501 billion to fund the initiative, with ₦223 billion already disbursed and additional payments in progress. Officials say the cash injection into the power value chain will lead to more stable electricity generation and improved reliability for millions of Nigerians. With power plants now better supported, the government expects increased investment, job creation, and enhanced service delivery in the sector. Special Adviser on Energy to President Tinubu, Olu Arowolo-Verheijen, described the programme as a turning point. “This programme is not just about settling legacy debts. It is about restoring confidence across the power sector ensuring gas suppliers are paid, power plants can keep running, and the system begins to work more reliably,” she said. She added that the debt resolution is part of wider ongoing reforms, including improved metering and the introduction of service-based tariffs that tie electricity bills to the quality of power received. “The government is also prioritising power supply to businesses, industries, and small enterprises because reliable electricity is critical to creating jobs, supporting livelihoods, and growing the economy,” Arowolo-Verheijen explained. “The goal is simple: more reliable power for homes, stronger support for businesses, and a system that works better for all Nigerians.” President Tinubu has commended all stakeholders involved in resolving the legacy issues and has directed that the next phase of the programme (Series II) commence this quarter. The announcement was made in a statement issued on Sunday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

I returned to Ogun State today with a full heart. What I saw in Iperu is the kind of progress we must insist on as a nation. Quite deliberate, and built to last. The Gateway Cargo Airport stands as proof of what is possible when vision is matched with discipline. As I said, “Our investment is about our people. Today’s foundation is for tomorrow’s prosperity.” I acknowledge Governor Dapo Abiodun @DapoAbiodunCON for his focus and consistency. Development is not about noise. It is about decisions that improve lives. From the aircraft launched today to the electric bikes, tractors, and security assets, this is what progress should look like. Practical, real, and visible. “Development must touch every level,” and I am pleased to see that principle taking shape in Ogun State. Our Renewed Hope reforms are not abstract. They have provided more resources for sub-nationals and are creating room for states to act and deliver. Many states, including Ogun, are rising to the moment. We will stay the course. “We are building for people, and we are building for prosperity.” As they say in Ogun, “Ìṣẹ́ yá…” I say, “Ìṣẹ̀ ń lọ.” The work continues. - Bola Ahmed Tinubu President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria .@ngrpresident .@nigeriagov

A rare photo of the Kuti brothers. Fela, Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti and Professor Olikoye Ransome-Kuti all from the same parents and a bl00dline of activism. The trio is known to have made marks that have enriched Nigeria's history in different ways. Fela, the Afrobeat creator, was a bone in the necks of various governments and administrations, especially the military juntas. With his songs, he drove his criticisms down the spine of the various heads of state in Nigeria. For his activism, he was arrested multiple times and sent to jail many times too, mostly on trumped-up charges. Dr. Beko, a medical doctor, was another very popular activist of his time. He gave the military governments a run for their money joining the likes of Gani Fawehinmi, Prof. Wole Soyinka and such other globally revered crusaders. Prof. Olikoye, another medical expert, however, was not an activist in the real sense of the word. He put his energy into serving the country as Minister of Health in the same government that his two brothers cr!ticised so strongly. It is to Olikoye's credit that Nigeria initiated the Primary Healthcare system to bring healthcare closer to the grassroots.

INEC Should Not Lose Sleep Over A Disgruntled Career Coup Plotter and Anti-Democratic Element You can imagine David Mark, a former career coup plotter, who, according to Professor Omo Omoruyi, allegedly threatened to kill Chief MKO Abiola and said, "I will shoot Chief Abiola the day NEC pronounces him the elected President!", now accusing President Tinubu of being like Abacha? Was it not David Mark and Abacha that planned the coup that ousted Ernest Shonekan on November 17, 1993? When David Mark and other disgruntled factional members of the ADC bought a jalopy political party, did they consult foreign governments or diaspora Nigerians? But now that their second-hand vehicle is predictably giving them the usual Tokunbo engine problems, they want to report Nigeria and its institutions to foreign governments. Reporting the Independent National Electoral Commission to foreign governments, as the factional ADC just announced they plan to do, is a waste of time and effort. The David Mark faction of the African Democratic Congress should understand that Nigeria is a sovereign nation. We are not governed from foreign capitals. And the Independent National Electoral Commission should not be beholden to a disgruntled former coup plotter. Their only loyalty is to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. David Mark and his fellow power-hungry discontents in the ADC should stop chasing shadows. Go to court and resolve your factional issues. Thankfully, the Court of Appeals has granted your faction an accelerated hearing. Take advantage of it to prove your case. That their faction of the ADC does not want to do that speaks volumes. Why are they afraid of the court? Reno Omokri Ambassador Designate to Mexico. Gospeller.
