As Physiotherapists, we have a great input with getting all patients up and out of bed. Working on an emergency floor, we assess and ideally get patients home or admitted to the wards if they are still medically unwell. #ThursdayMotivation #NHS #StayHome #COVIDー19 @thecsp

More than a million people aged 60 and over faced waits of 12 hours or more in England’s A&E’s last year – new analysis from RCEM reveals. And shockingly, the older a person is, the more likely they are to experience a long stay in the ED. It comes following the publication of RCEM’s Care of Older People QIP 2023-24, which examines the care older people are receiving in ED. Explore the key findings and recommendations here – tinyurl.com/5dbdx82k

“Interesting” A&E data from last month indicates methods intended to improve performance are failing to significantly address the biggest and most harmful issues. Read @RCEMpresident's full response to the latest performance data from NHSE here - tinyurl.com/bdh2vshp

#ICYMI No sign of winter pressures easing. A&Es bear the brunt of a gridlocked system. Hospitals are running dangerously close to capacity, thousands of people each day remain in hospital when they could go home and the system is grinding to a halt. Full article: rcem.ac.uk/no-sign-of-win…

"There are 140 people in the A&E department. One person has been waiting for a bed in a ward for three days." Thank you @BeccaBarry for spending two days in an Emergency Department to show the pressures facing Urgent and Emergency Care services this winter. Older people come to harm with long waits in Emergency Departments and long waits to be discharged when they are medically ready.
Royal College of Physicians@RCPhysicians

#NHS performance data shows emergency department attendances in England reached 2.3 million in December 2024. 54,207 patients in December waited longer than 12 hours from a decision to admit – we know many of those will have received care in temporary environments, such as corridors or chairs. This is unacceptable and must end. It’s slowing down patient flow through the hospital and impacting waiting times.

With patients at risk of harm due to spending days in Emergency Departments and health care professionals left in tears due to winter pressures, the Royal College of Emergency Medicine has asked ‘how has this been allowed to happen again?’ Read @RCEMpresident Dr Adrian Boyle's full response to the latest NHS England data here - tinyurl.com/2ujbhz7m

“Care delivered in corridors and other non-clinical spaces is unsafe, undignified and unacceptable. It violates the privacy of patients and leaves staff without access to essential, life-saving equipment. There are no circumstances under which it constitutes good, safe care. “What once used to be an exceptional circumstance, is now happening regularly in our hospitals. Health leaders and the secretary of state must waste no time in eradicating this shocking practice in the interests of patients and staff.” @theRCN responds to our call to end the normalisation of unacceptable and dangerous 'Corridor Care' 👇 shorturl.at/Rz395

We are on @MetroUK front page and in other media channels today because we have made it clear that the NHS temporary escalation spaces (TES) guide is "normalisation of what is an unacceptable and dangerous situation" @RCEMpresident. 👇 Links below. Called out NHSE’s narrative that it’s possible to provide safe care in corridors. Used strong language putting our statement together, reflecting @RCollEM members’ and colleagues’ strength of feeling on this matter. Degree to which corridor care is normalised is dumbfounding

“Asking patients if they take any time critical medication, and when their next dose is due, should be one of the questions every clinician asks. This simple enquiry becomes increasingly pertinent given the backdrop of the extreme long A&E stays more and more people are having to endure." @RCEMpresident Dr Adrian Boyle responds to a report by the Health Services Safety Investigations Body on the administration of time critical medication in the Emergency Department. Why do we uphold Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment? It reduces mortality, improves independence , reduces hospital admissions and can even reverse the progression of frailty. CGA is the way! buff.ly/3ZaQZJc #BGSconf

A&E doctors ‘not confident’ heading into winter - almost all worried patient safety is at risk. Almost nine out of 10 UK A&E clinicians who responded to RCEM's survey aren’t confident their EDs will cope well this winter. Full article & survey results: rcem.ac.uk/ae-doctors-not…
