DEAR ARSENAL… I’m 54 and, whilst I’ve never supported you, I’ve enjoyed so many games you’ve played in and had huge respect for you through the years, especially as a kid growing up in the 80s & 90s I respected Pat Jennings, Tony Adams, Kenny Sansom. As well as the likes of David Seaman, Ian Wright and Steve Bould. I remember watching you win the title on TV in ‘89 at Anfield with Micheal Thomas’ last-minute strike. Football at its finest. I was pleased for you. Decent set of players who played the game the right way. But, like many, I have to say something has changed. In a big way. This isn’t just because I support Brighton and you beat us over 60ish minutes on Wednesday night. (And yes, I mean 60.) It’s because of your whinging manager, your time-wasting and your blatant cheating. Football at its worst. I realise you and your supports won’t care. Because it’s win at all costs, right? Well, I suggest caution. Some relative neutrals have and will become bored and disillusioned with the brand of football and overall behaviour you are building your success on. Taking 31 minutes in one game to restart play? Utter madness. You’re quickly becoming the team so many want to see fail. (Again.) And right now, like many, the following sums me up… “Anyone but Arsenal”

THE FEEL-GOOD STORY BEHIND THIS PHOTO It’s early Saturday evening in Sussex and early Saturday morning here and I’m going to have to word this post very carefully to make sure it comes across in the right way. But it’s positive and I think, given the sate of society, we could all do with that right now. I’m on a far-away Polynesian island in the middle of the South Pacific. Not on holiday as such, but Mrs Bard’s job means she heads up a team who organise incentive trips for her company’s top performers. And the highest achievers ‘win’ and all expenses paid trio here. And I get to tag along as the owners’ invitation. I’m lucky and grateful. Anyway, there are 20+ couples here and last night they all got to have a professional photo taken on the beach with the sunset behind. But, away from this, something caught my attention - a random couple in the water. They were so young and looked so happy. I’d guess mid-20s and, as I found out later, on honeymoon. There were taking photos. But NOTHING like I was getting. I had them in the midst of a sunset, totally alone silhouetted in the water. A fantastic shot. But one that was rather wasted on me….they needed to have it. So, rather than just walking away once the ‘official’ photos were done, I took my shoes off, waded into the water and tried to get their attention. “Have you got AirDrop?” I shouted?, “I’ve got something for you”. Their English wasn’t great, but it seems ‘Airdrop’ is universally recognised, and I think they intuitively understood what had for them. The boy raced out, grabbed his phone and I sent him 6 of the best ones. And I can’t describe their reaction “thank you, thank you” shouted the girl, and lad was beside himself when he looked at them. We smiled, locked eyes, shook hands and embraced. THAT is human connection, right there. In a way it was a selfish act as I have felt fantastic since. I’ve fantasised about them telling others the story about this tall man in a polka-dot shirt with a funny accent who randomly shared photos, and who was never to be seen again. Maybe this will become THE photo from their honeymoon. And that gives me me a huge sense of happiness. It’s the kind of thing that makes the human experience so enjoyable. - if and when we are open to it. So, why have I had to be careful? Well, I’m worried about this coming across as ‘humble-brag’. A chance to blow my own trumpet wrapped up in a story about others. It really isn’t. I continue to make mistakes in my social interactions all the time. But I try to improve. And as long as we are all trying and have good intentions at heart I think we can forgive ourselves for the inevitable slip-up. My business has a saying ‘The Whole of Life’s a Lab’. It means that we can choose to turn on our ‘social radar’ and experiment IRL with behavioural insights that power our social interactions at will. And when we connect with other it can be incredibly powerful. Food for thought? Wishing everyone a lovely Saturday night and rest of the weekend. And UTA for tomorrow. 💙 Cheers, Jon. 👍🏻
