This argument would only have the mildest credibility if the minimum wage was the only thing the state mandated. In a world of rising taxes, regulation, inflation and energy costs, which are all the fault of the state, only a dummy blames the business owner.

@PeterMcCormack As much as I like independents and small businesses, I don’t feel like employees should suffer because shop owners are having a hard time. At the same time, I agree with you it’s crazy to pay people under 18 a 15£ wage, you can’t go straight to 15 from zero

Let’s be as clear as possible, Starbucks and Costa Coffee definitely want the minimum wage, as they want employee rights and any other drags on small business. This is why independents often get crushed because they don’t have: - Purchasing economies of scale - HQs centralising accounting, HR etc - Bargaining power on rent - Preferential tax treatment And with the destruction of town centres, edge of town retail coffee is setup for the chains.
