I have finally accepted the slow-motion collapse of this platform, linked to its owner and his opportunistic new friendship with someone I detest, and am now on another platform as well. Roses are red, the sky is blue, I hope to find you all there too. I'll still be here though.

Yes, my salary is only $57k, but the triumphant feeling I get when updating a museum record from "Pottery Fragment, Egyptian" to "Fragment of Faience Cosmetics Container Inscribed with Name of Nefertiti, c. 1350 BC, excavated at Amarna (Maru Aten)" is genuinely priceless. 😌

@GeorgyKantor Yes! It's in his "Discoveries" 1877: 44-45 (it was found early, in late March/early April 1864). I'm working on a book about Wood's excavations with the BM, so hopefully, more vignettes to follow! The paper trail is enormous!

Teaching this text in our 'Chrysostom to Chrysostom' ('Greek City under the Roman rule from Dio Chrysostom to John Chrysostom') class at Oxford next week.

#EpigraphyTuesday - Copy of a letter from Hadrian to the magistrates and council of Ephesus recommending Captain Lucius Erastus for honorary membership of the council. Lucius Erastus accompanied the imperial fleet, carrying Hadrian as he sailed from Ephesus to Rhodes in AD 124 (#Hadrian1900) and from Eleusis to Ephesus in AD 129. The letters were inscribed on the wall blocks of the scaenae frons of Ephesus Bouleterion. British Museum, London. Ephesos 191 epigraphy.packhum.org/text/247898 Inscription Translation: The Emperor Caesar, son of the deified Trajan, conqueror of Parthia, descendant of the deified Nerva, Trajanus Hadrianus Augustus, Pontifex Maximus, Tribune of the People for the third time, Consul for the third time, Father of his country, to the Magistrates of the Ephesians and to the Council, greeting. Lucius Erastus affirms that he is a citizen of yours and sails much also on the sea and that, as far as he can from doing this, he makes himself serviceable to his country and continually conveys over the sea the chief men of the [Ionian] race. Moreover he had interviews with me on two former occasions, first, when I made a voyage from Ephesus to Rhodes, and now on my arrival at your city from Eleusis. His wish is to become a member of the Council, and I accordingly commit to you the legal investigation of his claims; and if nothing stands in the way, and he appears to you deserving of that honour, I will give the amount of money which they pay on being admitted to the Council, and to meet the expenses of the election. Farewell. Read more 👉 followinghadrian.com/2024/10/01/sum…

@DocCrom This is a great example of the practical difficulties of erasure! When a carver goes slightly "off-piste" into the lower line: he was probably trying so hard not to chip the framework or the Imperial name above.

@roamintheempire @DocCrom @AncientRomeLive One of the fascinating things I've observed about Geta's erasures is not only that they tend to be complete removals, resulting in a longer jagged gash, but they often remove the connective "et" as if it had never existed. Leave no stone unscorned...

#EpigraphyTuesday; from the lapidary collection at the archaeological area of Minturnae, an inscription honoring the Severans for the repair of a road between Minturnae and Aquae Vescinae. The name of Geta was removed toward the bottom. #Archaeology #RomanArchaeology

@gdemaneuf Thank you, yes, it should read "XXXX": not enough X's on X is a serious crime! Alas I can't edit it, but I've uploaded a new image with the correction (below)

#EpigraphyTuesday We came across this poignant & vivid epitaph for a #Roman maid, Fausta Seia during our @instclasstudies workshop last week. Severus, her husband made it to commemorate her & their marriage: 12 years without any discord. Do you believe it?🧵 #Archaeology 📸Me

Our hands-on workshop explored dynamic ways of making physical copies of inscriptions. Squeezes may damage the paint, so we made a rubbing. A bit of coffee sack, tissue & carbon paper can make a lightweight & portable image that captures the physicality of an inscription. 3/3

The text (below) from Rome (CIL 6. 17777) was part of a private collection & is now used for teaching at UCL. It is beautifully carved, and although the red paint is modern, it captures the striking appearance of a painted inscription. 2/3

@chapps There is some debate about whether it is a vittae or an infula, but Hemelrijk's article makes a compelling case for an infula. I love the colour it might add as well!

@abby_fecit p.s. That infula is interesting. The Vestal virgins rocked them, too, and I’m wondering if the reconstructions I see are accurate, color-wise. flic.kr/p/2puna6k

#EpigraphyTuesday Meet the parents! This fabulous #Roman power couple in Nîmes, cut in high relief in an ornate dome, sport the hairstyles, costumes & imagery of a high-ranking officer in the 6th legion & an imperial priestess, set up by their children.🧵 📸me 🏛️Romanitas museum

@p_historians @DocCrom @antmoose @chapps @roamintheempire That is a really fascinating question, it makes one wonder about the context of the relief... which alas, seems to have been lost. Would this have actually happened or is it an aspirational claim of control? Thanks for sharing, I've never seen this one! 😍

#ReliefWednesday This scene offers some insights into Roman processes of construction. There seems to be enough finger pointing to suggest that collaboration was key then just as it is today! Provenance uncertain, but potentially C1st BCE Rome? 🏛Palazzo Massimo, inv. 231008
