People who pay taxes also have access to benefits. Unless you’re talking about medium to high earners which just defeats the purpose of the system You can argue for a better implementation but this angle is moot.
Tomisin@tomisin_ms

This is one British concept I just cannot wrap my head around. I’m not saying people from low-income households should not receive childcare support, of course they should. But working mums need it the most too. They are working, paying taxes, and should be able to access these benefits.

President Macron scolds the US and Israel for attacking Iran, "The day you say I don't like your regime, I consider you threatening your neighbour so I will intervene and bomb you, you open a Pandora's box" "Iran is a very bad regime, no discussion about that. I disagree with on a lot of topics" "But I don't agree we will fix the situation just by bombings or military operations" "Look at what happened in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya - we never delivered. Never" "You have to respect the sovereignty of people, if people want to change a regime, they can do so" "Having an agenda shared by Korea, France, the other Europeans, Canada, Japan, India, Brazil, Australia, you start having a third way" "Those who don't want to be dependent on China, or aligned by definition, on the US"

@hobysus Merci!!

UPDATE: THEY STOLE EVERYTHING?? FORTUNE: “The U.S. government is insolvent.” — The Treasury Department’s own consolidated financial statements for FY25, released last week to near-total media silence, say we’re BANKRUPT: $47T in total liabilities but only $6T in total assets! 🤯

No, but I do think this touches on something really important. A lot of women are yearning for a more traditional way of life as an escape from capitalism. Everyone is exhausted, overworked and has very little time for personal fulfillment. There’s a reason women fought for the ability to work, and own property. It’s because it gave them autonomy. That is an improvement, but simply gaining autonomy through access to the system, does not a happy life make. I hope we can see that going backward is never the solution. I hope we can be brave enough to believe better is possible.

Once rape stopped being seen as a property crime against a man’s right to control who his wife or daughter had sex with, and became a crime against the woman herself, it ceased to matter in the same way to the majority of men. it stopped being a capital crime, and conviction rates plummeted like a falling stockbroker in September of 1929, while rapes they shot up by 400% over the next few decades. Rape has become the easiest major felony to get away with; conviction rates are less than 2%, and 96% of rapists will never spend as much as a day behind bars. Suspended sentences are common; in the UK, as many as 40% of criminals convicted of a sex crime will get a non-custodial sentence. The conclusion that a significant number of men have stopped caring about rape as a crime is impossible to escape.
