A classic early spring day today with heavy and frequent showers for many, some featuring hail, graupel, sleet and even a wee bit of snow. Feeling cold in the wind but nothing out of the ordinary for March and actual temperature values nothing of note.

Oak bud-burst - incredibly early by about 4-5 weeks. The earliest I’ve seen it. Birch coming out too and about 3 weeks early.

@peacockreports @theiaincameron Spain is huge compared to the UK with over 2 times the surface area, and the highest mountain at 11,414 feet. Most tourists only go to a small part, usually the drier areas. Although it was a long time ago when I went to Castile & León I didn’t see a single foreigner in 3 weeks.

@theiaincameron 2025 was quite a dry year in central & eastern parts of the UK. The 1991-2020 average using ERA5 reanalysis shows that only the northern coastal regions of Spain (& Portugal) have more rain in a typical year than UK locations do. Western Scotland is genuinely a very wet place.

There is an impression that it rains a lot in the UK. But parts of Spain, often thought of as a very dry country, have far more rain than much of Scotland does. Barcelona (red arrow) is wetter than Elgin on the Moray coast. East Lothian is comfortably drier than Bilbao.

California's snowpack has collapsed at a pace never seen before in late winter, the fastest late February–March melt on record. Spring snowpack is now on track to be the second smallest since records began in 1950, trailing only 2015, the lowest snowpack year in the Sierra Nevada in at least the last 500 years. Phillips Station, the state's most iconic snowpack measurement site, is expected to show bare ground on April 1, the date that has historically marked peak snowpack.

Been feeling very much like spring recently. But early spring is often variable. This was the New Forest on 19th March 2018.
