Join our R&D Chemist, Twinkle Paryani, as she takes a deep dive into the science of cannabis aroma on the Highly Enformed Podcast.
With 2D Gas Chromatography (GCxGC), we take analysis to a whole new dimension—literally! This advanced system gives us an unparalleled level of detail, letting us separate, identify, and quantify compounds like never before.
One game-changer? Using specialized detectors, we confirmed the presence of sulfur-containing compounds in cannabis—previously speculated but never proven. These compounds, also found in hops, grapefruit, and wine, add complexity to the aroma profiles we know and love.

Ever wondered why strains like Tangie and Papaya burst with tropical citrus notes, while GMO and Chem 91 deliver that dank, savory funk? It’s not just terpenes—Tropicannasulfur Compounds (TCSCs) and Indole are the key flavorants shaping these aroma profiles.
🔬 TCSCs: Loud, overripe tropical fruit notes that dominate the aroma.
🔬 Indole: A musty, mothball-like compound that adds depth and complexity.
Here’s the key: When TCSCs are high, Indole is low, and vice versa. For growers, this means:
- Seeking bold, tropical citrus flavors? Focus on strains high in TCSCs.
- Want complex, savory profiles? Strains rich in Indole are your go-to.

While Terpenes have a large influence on the aroma of cannabis, they aren't responsible for the unique gas and skunk like qualities we know and love the plant for!
Cannasulfur Compounds (CSCs) are compounds found within the plant containing sulfur atoms - recently discovered at Abstrax using multidimensional gas chromatography.
This plant still has so many surprises to uncover, and the more we study the more we can truly understand it! Dive deeper into CSCs, Gas Chromatography and more in the “Science of Dank” white paper linked in bio!

I've seen a lot of changes to the biz in the past 20 years, and I bet you have too.
The revelation of the flavorants is by far the most impactful for me. Have the flavorants blown your mind too, and if so, how?
If not, what was the biggest change that flipped your script and changed how you think about our favorite plant?

The Cheese? Its real...
The distinct cheesy aroma in varieties like "Cheese" or "Blueberry Cheesecake," is primarily due to two fatty acids—octanoic acid (OA) and decanoic acid (DA)—which are also found in dairy products such as Stilton and Roquefort.
These acids contribute to sharp, pungent flavors associated with cheese!
OA and DA in cannabis can create a similar fatty, waxy, or cheesy aroma, though its prominence depends on the overall chemical profile of the strain. When other aroma compounds, like cannasulfurs, are less pronounced, the cheese-like aroma can become more noticeable!
