I'm reading about the French colonization of Algeria. And I have never read anything this stupid. The entire endeavor began not with a grand imperial strategy, but with a diplomatic spat involving a fly whisk. In 1827, the Hussein Dey of Algiers struck the French consul with a fan during a dispute over unpaid FRENCH debts. King Charles X, desperate to distract his citizens from domestic failures, used this "insult" as a pretext for a naval blockade and an eventual invasion in 1830. It was a war started by a failing monarchy to settle a grudge and boost poll numbers. They had no idea why they invaded Algeria and didn't know what to do with it. After the initial victory, the French military was essentially "stuck." For years, the government in Paris oscillated between total withdrawal, limited occupation of coastal cities, and full-scale conquest of the interior. They lacked a coherent administrative policy, leading to decades of brutal, reactive warfare against local resistance, such as the forces led by Emir Abdelkader. This strategic failure was worsened by the fact that they completely destroyed the existing administration, which immediately became a massive problem when they tried to actually govern the country. By dismantling the Ottoman-era bureaucracy and local systems of authority (even burning the archives) without having a replacement ready, the French were completely lost; they had no records, no local mediators, and no understanding of traditional land rights. This administrative blindness meant they couldn't manage civil life effectively, turning what could have been a transition of power into a total collapse of order that forced them to rely on an expensive and awkward military rule. Furthermore, they totally alienated the population through a crazy level of looting, stupid destruction, and a complete disrespect for local culture. A prime example was the occupation of 50% of the mosques in Algiers by French troops, who repurposed these sacred sites as stables, hospitals, or barracks. This blatant desecration, combined with the systematic pillaging of private property (even the destruction of palaces), signaled to the Algerians that the French were a force intent on erasing their way of life. Now I understand that colonization is rarely a planned and organized process: it's a brutal demographic flow which often refuses to make sense. While the state provided the initial spark, the "colonization" of Algeria was eventually fueled by a messy influx of people from across the Mediterranean—not just Frenchmen, but Spaniards, Italians, and Maltese settlers. These migrants were often fleeing poverty or political upheaval at home. This unplanned human tide eventually forced the hand of the French government, transforming a chaotic military occupation into a permanent settler colony that the state then had to defend, justify, and manage for over a century.
