"there's a guy in my office who's 10 times as productive as his peers" well that's weird. why are they within touching distance. in every other area of human life, we've figured out ways for such people to not touch

the idea of the "10x engineer" is such a specific artifact of a particular set of inefficiencies in labor markets that were on their way to being fully sorted before LLMs even arrived to change the game. so many brains broken by an ostensible law of nature that's deeply temporary

NYT confirmed on Friday that Paolo Zampolli used his influence to have her transferred to an ICE facility. She disappeared for 3.5 months & was at 2 different facilities. She has described the horrors of that experience. Amanda’s story is much bigger than anyone realizes. MUCH.

Amanda’s story is unique. She’s been targeted since she was at least 15 yo & was trapped in a relationship with a powerful older man who spent 20+ years abusing her in various ways. Then when she finally broke free & found freedom, Paolo used his influence to have ICE deport her.

@herandrews ma’am it’s not a secret. all she’s doing is saying she’s come around to the same read that the rest of us have of that scene without any insider information. I wouldn’t want to put my name to an admission of prior idiocy either

You can write anonymously. I respect many anons on this site. What’s dishonorable to do as an anon is the whole turncoat routine of “I used to be friends with these people, let me leverage that experience to dish about how secretly terrible they are.”
Helen Lewis@helenlewis

@herandrews Out of interest, do you think that the Scriblerus Club were part of a feminised society? Or that the Claremont Review shouldn't have published "Publius Decius Mus" on the Flight 93 election unless he was willing to put his name to it? What are the rules here?

Mostly this piece is boring and predictable but I will say that “Don’t publicly trash your old side unless you’re willing to put your name next to it” is one of those honor-based rules of open conflict that feminized societies just don’t get, so thanks for illustrating the point.

@BernoulliDefect @RepealTCPA1947 there are more dimensions to play with in pedagogy than just dialing up a linear intensity dial. they do that in asia and we know what it looks like. it’s more interesting to find efficiencies and productive paradigms (eg what people are finding with montessori these days)

@BernoulliDefect @RepealTCPA1947 this is just maximum focus. the proposed mechanism for the success of immersion in language learning is different: it’s that you’re actually using the language to do what you want on a daily basis. it would be like if you had to make a cooking robot in order to eat

Strange that we stumbled upon the best way to learn foreign languages - total intense immersion - and didn’t apply it to anything else in academia.

@simonsarris there are many things men can contribute and money is only one of them. the issue is if you are used to being tolerated in certain ways because you are bringing in the money, you can't be surprised when suddenly you are not tolerated in those ways without the money

it seems hard to believe and a political impossibility to do on purpose but all the data we have suggests "male-only economic stimulus" is a plausible way to raise birth rates like no other which is what happened incidentally after WW2 with GI bill and similar benefits

ultimately people are complaining about their own emotional immaturity wrt to other people’s suffering. no one’s really figured out to a comfortable and practical extent how they feel about other people’s suffering and what they’re supposed to feel or do about it

of the world, but when I say trying to live by social norms is "arbitrary tyranny" and "living in fear" and if you want me to behave, you have to make your etiquette rules formal, legible, and predictable, I'm an autistic asshole

a couple jobs ago, we used to have corporate trainings on conflict resolution and communication which I called "remedial interpersonal libertarianism" bc it was mainly about trying to get people to internalize that other people can have different wants and understandings /
