On this day, 53 years ago, George A. Romero's "The Crazies" (1973) was released in the USA. George A. Romero on why "The Crazies" (1973) failed at the Box Office: "I think maybe it was a little ahead of its time. At the time I made it, we were still in Vietnam and it was a very heartfelt problem, a part of the national consciousness and I don’t think anyone was ready to see that situation—even though it’s not a Vietnam film, it’s an anti-military film. People weren’t ready to look at it in a comic-book context. That’s my . . . not an error, really, but wrong timing. It was a little too ambitious, a little too rushed. I should have taken out some of the plot incidents and dealt with the rest in a more linear way, with a little more time and space. It’s very staccato, which I like at times, but I need a breather from it every once in a while. Aside from that, it needed to be a little longer. The distributor insisted on cutting about fifteen minutes and I didn’t have any say about that. I made the cut but had nothing to say about the final running time. The distributor misinterpreted what the film was about. I still think that the film could have gone out into the drive-ins—it’s a potboiler, a B movie, an action melodrama, at least on the surface—and it needed to be played that way. And he thought it was 'Jaws' and was going to make a lot of money. He spent a lot of bread opening it in New York in two East Side houses and two Times Square houses, and it didn’t survive a week. Then it got shelved. There was no way to revive it, which is another unfortunate reality of the business. We sold it to TV and some European territories. People are actually asking to book it now, but it’s not because of it but because of 'Martin' (1977) and 'Dawn of the Dead' (1978)" (George A. Romero's interview with Dan Yakir. 1977)
