@friebos jeepers, I don't usually go so far as to read the comments on here, but the ones below are incredible. Who knew there were so many experts with aggressive takes? Forza Daniel, vive TCP!

Sometimes I wish someone wouldn’t work with Pogačar just so people could see what this supposedly ingenious tactical ploy would actually achieve. Suspect the clamour would die down pretty quickly.

@friebos @cycling_podcast @nieuwsbladsport Really enjoyed the debate yesterday, good to hear the ability to argue over something which doesn't really matter and yet not falling out still exists! FWIW everybody is right, but as far as cycling is concerned having this superstar that has panache and character is worth ££££

Debate about dominant icons attracting/repelling rumbles on (inc. in @cycling_podcast this week), but organisers' perspective clear in this from Mauro Vegni to @nieuwsbladsport: "There was Pogačar & that was all I needed. The race was on everyone's lips, from BBC to NY Times."

@horton_official Further stagnation of ag policy incoming… does this portend even more radical reform or even less?!

@JoeWStanley And then you consider ELMS is a compensatory/ income foregone scheme rather than a support payment and you realise how much farm businesses have had to cope with and will continue to have to adapt to.

The numbers = complex but the headline = that govt is *cutting* the budget for nature-friendly farming even in nominal terms. If we adjust for simple RPI inflation, the real-terms cut even today (from 2014!) is 27%. This is *not* the biggest budget ever. theguardian.com/politics/2025/…

@horton_official Hi Helena, have you seen any analysis of the net impact on farmer's pockets? Bearing in mind ELMS require plenty of cost the reduction of the budget plus what will be continued increases in input costs associated with the actions will compound to significant impact on btm line.

Defra’s farming budget figures are finally out - story to come - but see how the farming budget is being cut each year. Reforms to the sustainable farming incentive will be announced soon, apparently

@horton_official And in real terms presumably this means it is even less with inflation eroding the value further?

...From what I understand, the budget is about £2.5bn a year for the first 2 years of spending period then it shrinks each year. SO by 2028/29, farming budget is £2bn, maybe slightly more if there are grants etc announced, but much less than farmers got under EU & were promised

THREAD- here's what I think is happening with the farming budget (NB we don't have full details yet, might later today and this is my personal view) Defra is misleadingly claiming it is "increasing" the ELMS budget to £2bn by 2028/9, which some eco groups have repeated...

What happens if nature-friendly farming support gets cut? 🚨 With major budget decisions due this June, any reduction to Defra’s farm budget could slow progress toward more sustainable, climate-resilient farming in England. Read more here 👉 wildlifetrusts.org/blog/vicki-hir…

@SJLaing A big opportunity being missed not to collaborate between farm business and every other business type that is going to be so severely impacted to make a louder voice and stronger impact!

Disappointing to hear misrepresentation on Call Kaye of UK Gov changes to inheritance tax for business - it’s not just farming that’s affected, the impact on other types of family businesses is either being misunderstood or ignored.
