@acgao_tech @Pirat_Nation H265 is still heavier and cost more to do. H264 is lighter and can do things with less bandwidth. There you go.

The Licensing Alliance just changed H.264 video royalties for new licenses starting in 2026. Big streaming services used to pay a maximum of $100,000 per year. Now the cap is much higher up to $4.5 million for the largest platforms. Old 2025 licenses stay the same. Small or new services still pay the lower rate.

@LeoVasanko @Pirat_Nation I was streaming HEVC to my browser last week. It wasn’t supported at all a while ago, but support is improving.

@acgao_tech @Pirat_Nation Browsers don't support HEVC (H.265), so streaming services still use H.264. But browsers do already support AV1 which is better than those, and completely free.

@My1xT @Pirat_Nation Apple added AV1 decoder support in the M3 (if memory serves). I figured HEVC was more expensive, but only before seeing that $100k => $4.5m price bump.

@acgao_tech @Pirat_Nation Hevc is likely not cheaper than h264. The most likely push is to av1 i guess. H264 is still important for ppl who don't otherwise need to upgrade their hardware.

Wow. Dissing LTT for fun and profit (well, not so much profit in my case).

If I don't keep a light-mode device on-hand, I'll end up pushing an app update that's unusable. I'm pretty happy with how both modes rendered.

Wrapped up at 4am this morning, but the end result was great; totally works. There's still room for a lot of improvement though, in the algorithm. I need to add a little bit of randomness to it, for starters. I've got a forthcoming blog post on it.

It's 1am and I'm working on the offline "feel-based" recommendation system for ShowShark. See, it's not about what I like, it's about what I'm in the mood to watch. It's not "there" yet, but it's getting close-ish.

@tik_ene @Pirat_Nation It seems to have been the trend for all of the YouTube channels I loved 5 - 10 years ago. As their channels exploded, they invested in employees, equipment, and so on -- can't blame them for that. But they "lost in the plot" at the same time.

@acgao_tech @Pirat_Nation He went the mr beast route making everything mega corporative, scripted and kinda souless. Cant blame him for making others do most of the work since he's probably tired of doing the same thing for +10 years, but its kinda unwatchable nowadays indeed, same as mr breast
