@varma_ashwin97 @hassankhan I appreciate the callout @hassankhan - not sure I'm the right person, but I would agree that you can't have this charging rate without designing batteries that could specifically withstand this. Perhaps some sort of power electronics in the middle? Not a EE so am not sure

BYD’s latest fast charging announcement puts on display how China’s overlapping industrial ecosystems benefit each other.
China’s dominance in EVs relies not only on batteries & motors but upstream critical minerals and increasingly semiconductors built domestically.

BYD is world's 1st chipmaker to mass produce auto grade 1500V SiC power module - central to 1000V platform. But it relies on domestic supply chain. Hunan Sanan supplies BYD w/ Sic products. It has achieved 95% yield on 8-inch Sic substrate, lowering cost by 40% vs import. -> lowers cost & production volume for 8-inch SiC wafers -> allowing BYD & others to scale up Sic module production As BYD scales up 1200V & 1500V Sic production, its high-voltage platform will penetrate the 100k-150k EV mkt over next 2/3 yrs. That will lead to greater efficiency, energy savings & fast charging across mass mkt EV models. & eventually we will see 4C to 6C charging on PHEVs also.

See this recent @CarnegieMellon study. But the key is where are the EV batteries made. Federal policies are pushing to make them in US, and Michigan leaders have encouraged companies to set up shop there. Several billion-dollar plants are getting built

IRA credits focus on downstream (components, cells, packs), which is where most projects have been announced.
But it limits the large 30D credits to vehicles with supply chains that exclude #China entirely.

Both are transparently dumb narratives that assume we can't invent solutions to our problems, a hilarious irony because both problems stem from over-invention.

@Andercot I don't strictly disagree w/the first statement but "meek servile lives"/focusing on 'narrative' feels odd when framing serious problems.
Also Malthus wrote his text in 1798; Haber-Bosch was ~1910, so are you sure the causality is backward?

@DoctorVive I totally agree, but it seems like heat pumps just aren't there from a technology perspective, from the folks on the ground installing them. We need to get the tech up to par or better.

When both @JohnSemmelhack and @energysmartwv are talking about HPWH issues, it's time to pay attention. I remain bullish on unitary HPWH tech (HP attached to the tank), but we must get the tech working just as well in the field as in the lab.

So far IRA subsidies have financed more methane-gas heaters than heat pumps. 😩

@alexbhturnbull People don't recognize there are two types of "environmentalists" with fundamentally different goals - folks focused on emissions and folks focused on land use (or, rather, disuse). Li mining has held up for a decade by the latter! Not to delegitimize the concerns in that case

The whole “locking in emissions” discourse is so daft on the left. Fossil has high opex and if you pass a carbon tax can go staggeringly negative cashflow. Nothing gets locked in if prices go too low or carbon costs too high. Opposing the Manchin bill on this basis is daft.

And I haven't heard much of the latter. Would thermal long-duration storage let us store energy produced say in surplus of summer (solar) to be used in winter?

@bataille_chris My cursory understanding leads me to believe it's a manufacturing problem. East Asia has dominated electronics manufacturing, which can translate to large format EV batteries, but solid state technology by nature necessitates a wholly different manufacturing process.

Great thread on a great thread, but the answer may be in plain sight - lithium solid state. Toyota had an early lead and has been goofballing it. BYD & CATL have thrown their entire R&D staff at it, but the prize is still out there to be had.
