"Legend has it in Japanese folklore, there exists a practice to locate missing cats who wander away from home and appear reluctant to return. According to this tradition, one should engage with the neighborhood's stray cats as if conversing with fellow humans. Describe the lost cat's appearance, its coat color, even share its name, and implore the street cats to assist in its search. Express heartfelt sentiments about the love for the missing feline and the earnest desire for its safe return. In response, the street cats purportedly collaborate with each other, pooling their efforts to facilitate the return of the lost cat to its rightful home." via JAPAN Chu-Hi.CAV #Caturday #CaturdaySaturday #CatsOnX #Japan #Folklore

Pune flooding should be studied as a masterclass in destroying a hill city’s natural hydrology. A city sitting ~560m above sea level shouldn’t flood, unless you obliterate its rivers, hills, and drainage for real estate. The real estate lobby has systematically destroyed Pune, once known as the Oxford of the East and even considered a potential capital of India before Delhi.

Literally the oldest Kannada text, Kavirajamarga which is a manual on how to compose poems lays out the rules of mixing Sanskrit and Kannada. While excesses are obviously cautioned, it is also said that Kannada forms a golden necklace upon which Sanskrit words are systematically attached like rubies, to create the beautiful ornament of poetry. Sanskrit and Kannada are partner languages that have fused so well, it honestly makes a case for effortless integration of both. Here is a detailed thread about Kavirajamarga with the actual verses; x.com/CivitasSameer/…

This 2 months old kitten and my entire family is going through a horrible grief. The kitty who hated being touched now doesn't want to be left alone, he wants to be held and talked to. Love, love is so powerful. Even a 2 months old kitty knows it's love that would heal his heart

So finally they told me the truth. My subbamma passed away two days ago by accident. They didn't want me to know so they lied she went missing. Idk what to do. I thought she'd be with me forever. I lost my Subbamma forever.

To be fair, Japanese are by nature "appreciators". I've been seeing their travel tweets across India, France, and now US. They always to choose to highlight the best parts of the place they are visiting, taking the trouble of seeing it from a local's POV - an endearing trait.
Melissa Chen@MsMelChen

The best part is that the America that Japanese people adore the most… is the same one that coastal elites call “flyover trash” They’re not autistically LARPing NY cynicism or SF polycule / LA wellness culture. They’re drawn to the heartland of the American South and all its trappings - the jacked-up trucks, backyard BBQs, country radio, big skies and the friendly "yes ma'am" drawl.

For those complaining that Bangalore lacks festive spirit, go outside today. You’ll find pandals on every street corner serving panaka and kosambari to everyone.

“I just realized there is no exact equivalent word for "empathy" in Hindi. Or any Indian language.” You moron (I don’t use ad hominems and bad words here but am forced to make an exception here). I can list out dozens of Indian words for empathy. Leave that aside, the English word “empathy” itself was coined only in the beginning of the 20th century. In 1908-1909, the British psychologist Edward B Titchener coined this from Greek “empatheia” (en + patheia) in an attempt to create a calque for the German word “einfühlung” (in + feeling). In German and also in English at first, it does/did not have the modern meaning but was used to describe an aesthetic projection of oneself into objects or art, rather than human emotional empathy. In modern Greek, empatheia means malevolence and prejudice (as the Greek root “path” also has the meaning of suffering) and in Ancient Greek, the word meant passion inside oneself (in-passion). By your stupid logic, English people too didn’t have empathy before the mid-20th century.

I just realized there is no exact equivalent word for "empathy" in Hindi. Or any Indian language. Explains a lot, doesn't it. The closest one is the Sanskrit "samvedana" which is very close to empathy but not quite and is not broadly used. This concept of feeling/sharing/understanding someone else's pain, trauma and suffering is very alien to our culture. Because our culture is basically the caste system. And caste system actually actively *disincentivizes* empathy. We have words for kindness, compassion, love, charity, generosity, but not for empathy. Frankly, many older cultures don't understand and define empathy. Not just ours. It's an highly evolved concept, an high evolved word. And we we are a highly unevolved, backward culture.
