What’s a good entry point into literary science fiction. It all feels so impenetrable to me. For reference, the closest I’ve delved into the genre is Vonnegut

@tomidispenser @simonsbookclub Its not doing nothing because i even enjoy stuff like Big sur by jack keruoac. There has to be substance in the nothingness

@achordae @simonsbookclub Idk but i think we just don't have similar taste if you think that doing nothing in literature is what makes a book bad, because it is not

@simonsbookclub @tomidispenser the writing was beautiful but yeah i thought it was quite useless and it was really dreadful just to be dreadful. Chapters upon chapters of the most sad village in the world and doing nothing but looking at yourself grossly and i just didnt care anymore

@tomidispenser What did you like about it? There were a few parts where I was impressed with the writing, but otherwise I hated the narrator and had no interest in his obsession with his dreams.

@THEQUlCKSTER His writing style isnt unreadable but god he sucked at writing, and his grammar was just not good. I understand the prose and you do have to just get used to it cuz the ideas are amazing. Its kinda like getting used to Zizeks almost unintelligible accent until u listen a lot

It’s kind of crazy cause when you’re reading Hegel and get into flow state with his prose it makes sense. You get put in a trance and then when you snap back to reality and look at a random segment of the writing, you’re just confused, but that’s the thing, it’s the whole thing.

@cwik_greg I'm waiting to see when any of you guys from your ivory towers will praise anyone in the circle jerk of writers. Your miserable lives is dedicated to tore down others.

Ocean Vuong doesn't write "poetic prose." He writes confused prose which needs serious editing. His metaphors evince nothing.

🧵I want to shine light on a situation in which I have gone through severe harm and am only now able to recover. I was forced to make this public because I was not able to be reasoned with. Here's my experience with Cupidite or @ thugbrunting on YouTube with 13k subs 🧵

Used to be that the most freaked out bitch in the Barnes and Nobel was buying Robert Glück or Dennis Cooper or William Burroughs. Now it’s 34 year old lady gooners with armfuls of AI assisted romantasy slop published under a fuck ass pen name like Rosemary Nightshade. It’s sad.

@nourician I think it's pretty obvious if anybody saw Kafka they would not think of him as white

imagine a modern novelist with no interest in these very specific oeuvre of like 10 white guy novelists from a very specific time period. imagine a modern novelist deriving inspiration from other literary traditions
Max Carpenter@solexyoghurt

imagine a modern novelist with no interest in James, Eliot, Kafka, Joyce, &c... imagine reading in dull agony as they clumsily reinvent those wheels. imagine they never even bother to drive the car afterward. this is ~90% of contemporary cinema.

@nourician "Everyone should at least acknowledge a literary canon" is not the same as "Imagine if someone wrote without having read anything at all." The correct point should just be Why is this the only thing that people should read, and instead look outwards.

@achordae has had a lasting literary impact because its been allowed to have a lasting literary impact. theres work out there that matched / outdid the canon that will never see the light of day. we should question why the canon is what it is, and who decides whats worthy of being in it

@saintmacklin ur very right im just now getting into the literary canon and reading Beat gen and stuff after finding out about the beautiful work of James Joyce. there's really not much at barnes and nobles in this department which is why i stick to local booksellers
