Thank you for your balanced and wise response. I agree with your reading and analysis. I also understand the disappointment of many. The Church blesses weapons and armies, engages in dialogue with all religions, yet when it comes to homosexuality, it seems to adopt a rigid and discriminatory stance. Statements like those made by the Pope during a flight have repercussions in many concrete situations, especially among young people, who are often discriminated against and rejected by their families in the name of religion. Regardless of the Pope’s intentions, these are unfortunately the real-life effects: discrimination is reinforced, and feelings of shame and guilt deepen within individuals. It drives many away from the Church. The effect is not pastoral. I repeat, regardless of the real intentions of Pope Leo XIV. What I am truly convinced of, however, is that those of us who are Catholic and homosexual (a fact that, moreover, does not define who we are, because we are much more than a sexual orientation) are called to live and bear witness to our faith. And do so with responsibility and commitment, aware—like everyone—of our fragility and of the unconditional mercy with which God loves us. Like all believers, we are called to experience His mercy, to nurture our union with God, who dwells within us, and to educate our conscience toward true freedom. The Church may eventually evolve also through what it comes to understand from lived faith—even from those who are homosexual and share with a partner a life of commitment, responsibility, and fidelity—in other words, a mature love. For now, the Pope’s words can be for many a source of pain that we can unite with the suffering of Jesus, who on the cross cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” In that moment, too, and in a mysterious way, he felt misunderstood and rejected.

To answer questions I've been getting about the Holy Father's comments on blessing same-sex couples today, in a press conference on his way back to Rome: First, we should trust the discernment of the Holy Father in this, as in all things. In addition to his teaching role as the Vicar of Christ, Pope Leo XIV is a kind, wise, thoughtful and prayerful man. And what he says, even in a press conference, needs to be seen in light of this, and appreciating his knowledge of the needs of the universal church. In terms of his comments, it seems, at least to me, that Pope Leo is not abrogating "Fiducia Supplicans," the Vatican document from 2023 that allows priests, under certain conditions, to bless “same-sex couples.” (That’s the language used.) One of the many conditions was that these blessings would not be formalized, that is, as a kind of planned liturgy. To that end, the German bishops' proposal would be, as I read it, to formalize these blessings more, a move that flows out of the German bishops' sincere desire to listen to the voices of German Catholics raised during their synodal processes. But the Vatican (and the Holy Father) oppose this move, as the Pope said today. Overall, though, "FS," even though it has proven controversial in some parts of the world (while warmly welcomed in others), still stands. The Holy Father's larger point is that to move beyond "FS" would be to risk unity in the church, and he is correct. One of the things that was hammered home for me in the Synod was how things that can seem tepid in the West ("What's the big deal about blessing same-sex couples?," as I heard often) are white-hot in other parts of the church ("Fiducia Supplicans is blessing sin," as I heard just as often). One of Pope Leo's overall desires for the church is for unity, which he restated again today. (Remember that his papal motto is "In the One, we are one.") His perhaps even larger point was that the church is for all people, for "tutti, tutti, tutti," as he has said several times now, quoting Pope Francis. A church for everyone, including LGBTQ people. Including everyone. (By the way I wouldn’t read too much into his calling the Pope’s phrase “infamous,” before saying “famous.” It must have been an exhausting trip and he also said the church values life “from conception to natural birth,” when he clearly meant “natural death.” We shouldn’t parse slips of the tongue, especially after a grueling journey.) At least this is how this seemed to me after listening to his wise, careful and thoughtful response today, after an exhausting trip. Let's continue to pray for our Holy Father as he seeks to balance many things in the church we all love. And let's continue to trust Pope Leo in his ongoing discernment about these matters, and in all matters.

Tiene razón. Eso sucede porque hay monopolio en algunas rutas de Avianca desde Colombia hacía el exterior. Por ejemplo Bog - NY. Es absurdo!!!

Vale la pena recordarlo. Su método fue servir (se hizo esclavo hasta la muerte) y vino por hacernos experimentar el amor incondicional y misericordioso de Dios. “Es conveniente que venga a tu casa”, le decía a los grandes pescadores cómo el publicano Zaqueo. Escandalizando a los justos y a la gente de bien. Su compañía preferida eran los marginados, los olvidados, los pecadores cómo los publicanos. No se la pasaba en grande centros urbanos sino en pequeñas aldeas. Eligió sus apóstoles entre gente humilde. Mucho por reflexionar, mucho por aprender, muchos por imitar mientras seguimos sembrando odio y división, en lugar de comprensión y perdón. Pasaron más de dos mil años y seguimos sin querer entender (por qué es incómodo).

Para México @Aeromexico Para Estados Unidos Blujets o @emirates. También utilizo @CopaAirlines y @LATAM_CO. Hay muchas alternativas mejores que Avianca.
