DORSET Police has been told it must improve how it tackles serious and organised crime. Inspectors found staff and officers to be ‘overwhelmed’ with their caseloads, and some lead officers lacked the resources to ‘effectively do their job’. His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services inspected the south west regional response to serious and organised crime. Overall, the South West Organised Crime Unit was rated adequate however the individual forces were not. Dorset Police were marked as requiring improvement as well as Wiltshire Police, Devon and Cornwall Police and Avon and Somerset Constabulary. The final force, Gloucestershire Constabulary, was rated as inadequate. Inspectors found the south west unit were not assessing their serious and organised crime threats consistently. The report detailed how Dorset Police’s serious and organised crime investigation team were managing 15 investigations at the time of the inspection and staff and officers were feeling overwhelmed. It was said two of their officers were managing an investigation that had been ongoing for six year and the team ‘had no capacity to take on any further investigations’. Since the inspection, the force have increased numbers in their team. At the time of the inspection, Dorset Police had 13 live serious crime prevention orders but did not have enough time to proactively manage and enforce these orders. It was also said that lead responsible officers did not have the necessary training, with some lacking in capacity and resources to do their job effectively. However, the force was effective in partnering with local agencies including housing, the Environment Agency and Immigration Enforcement. Chief constable Amanda Pearson, of Dorset Police, said the regional organised crime units were created to manage cross-border serious and organised crime threat. She said the report fairly shows the improvement areas for the force and they are ‘committed’ to fulfilling them. Following the inspection, Dorset Police has been increasing the size of its serious and organised crime team and has worked with partners to ‘professionalise training’. “We have brilliant officers and staff working tirelessly with SWROCU teams and colleagues in forces across the region to combat the evolving threats of serious and organised crime — from online child sexual abuse and exploitation to complex fraud and money laundering,” she said.  “We are grateful for the recommendations in the report, and will continue to work collaboratively to drive forward improvements so we can continue to be tough on crime and help make the south west a safe place for everyone.” Link to the article: bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/25234789.…

UPDATE | A police officer, who behaved aggressively and used unreasonable force while arresting a 15-year-old boy in Bournemouth town centre, has been dismissed after allegations of gross misconduct were found proven against him. Police Constable Lorne Castle had admitted misconduct in relation to breaching the standards of professional behaviour relating to Authority, Respect and Courtesy, Conduct and Use of Force but denied gross misconduct. During the hearing PC Castle apologised and admitted his behaviour was rude, aggressive and inappropriate, but said he had panicked in the moment. Following a public misconduct hearing at Dorset Police Headquarters in Winfrith, which concluded on Thursday 29 May 2025, the independent panel found that the breaches amounted to gross misconduct and said the matter was so serious that the only outcome was dismissal without notice.
