Dear President Trump (@POTUS), I voted for you in all three elections, but you really need to become better educated on technology issues and the positive impact Elon Musk has had on the United States’ economy and technological foundation. You frankly sound very misinformed on these matters, and that’s not a good look for our country or for you. Elon has repeatedly stated he doesn’t want or need subsidies. He simply advocates for a true free-market approach where the best product prevails. Unfortunately, that’s not what your administration is pursuing. You are subsidizing and streamlining approvals for all energy sources and automobile types except the new technologies Elon’s companies are developing, while imposing extra punitive excise taxes and “no Chinese content” rules specifically on solar and wind projects. Without Elon’s companies, we would still be relying on Russian rockets to transport astronauts to and from the International Space Station. The U.S. government would have a severely diminished capacity to launch satellites into space and would be paying ten times more per launch than it does with SpaceX. People in disaster-stricken areas desperately needing communication capabilities would be left stranded without the rapid, often complimentary Starlink deployments. Successful trials of brain-chip implants to address severe disabilities like paralysis and blindness would remain confined to science fiction. Many other groundbreaking innovations Elon has brought to America and the world would simply not exist. On the campaign trail, you called Elon a genius, yet now you’re labeling him a grifter. You’ve done an amazing job with border security and fighting the good fight on many fronts. You get an A+ for that. But when you make statements that are 100% factually incorrect—like claiming solar can’t keep the TV and AC on at night (false: it can and does with utility-scale batteries and home battery units worldwide, improving grid control by moving it from the Stone Age to a modern, real-time control era; there’s a reason China is adding more solar than any other energy type, and it’s not to save the environment), or that you can’t take long road trips in EVs (wrong: I’ve done it, as have nearly every Tesla owner I know, crossing the country without issue—it’s the best road-tripping car I’ve ever owned), or that EV trucks ruin roads and can’t go far (wrong again)—you undermine your credibility with these incorrect statements. As an ardent supporter of you and our country, I pray that God grants you the wisdom to recognize that what you said about Elon on the campaign trail was true. I humbly recommend consulting him on these issues and seriously considering his advice, not calling him degrading names, making false statements about technology you don’t fully understand, or downplaying the significant and critical contributions he has made and continues to make to our country. What happened to the idea that we need to protect and support our geniuses? If we lose the technology race, we lose everything. Instead of being great, we will be too late, and that won’t look good on a hat, trust me. On another front, can we please get our spending under control? I think you would admit the OBBB doesn’t achieve that and needs to. The law of compounding interest stands still for no man or country. Compounding interest on savings is great; on debt, it’s a road to bankruptcy, as you well know. The can can’t take another kick. The mess you inherited is monumental and will require bold action, not business as usual. May God bless you, President Trump, and may God bless America.
