The Smiths didn't used to be a major band, mostly listened to by low-rider Chicanos for some reason. Jennifer Connelly was sort of a B+ celb in the 90s. Few Americans knew who Kate Bush in the 80s, she wasn't even on MTV much if at all. Retroactive Celebrity.

@Empty_America Do young people know that The Smiths were not a big band when they were around?

@JustinWhang Idk if it's still like this but the last time I was on long Island the accents were still around. Seems like it's concentrating in certain areas while disappearing in others.

@tadpolemilk420 @ptichushka This is definitely true. Slowdive way more embraced by the youth than MBV. Not sure how that happened - but the algorithm chose Slowdive

The NYC metro area, for the first time, is larger than it was pre-COVID. It's recovered all losses and has grown by a net 29,048 since April 2020. Back above 20 million again.

@DamnDeShawn That are was faaaar on the round to gentrification before the arena. And what was in that spot? Some crusty old transit carcass. Don’t act like this was Robert Moses putting a highway through Central Park or some shit

as a former employee at Barclays It did nothing for it. Those black businesses been gone. The community it displaced would argue against your point wholeheartedly. while gentrification may have already been on its way that move fast forwarded its progress yearrrss ahead.
Zeeti@DJZeeti

Barclays did more for the community than apartments would have .. when the stadium opened you had to have a Brooklyn address to even apply. They put black businesses in the stadium. They were even signing up workers with Carver bank which is black owned

@BeyondTheMemes You really had to be there when the Rebirth album dropped. Butterfly’s delivery was different than anyone at the time and their jazz samples were more pronounced than the premo and Pete rock who were mostly taking just small sounds to add texture. They also dressed weird haha

Whether anyone agrees with the term or not, DP’s had a unique spin especially for the time. Beyond just the lineup/personnel, their “quirky” approach stood out at a time when the Native Tongues were splintering and “neosoul” was still years away.

There was nothing alternative about Digable Planets. 2 male MCs 1 female MC. A full album of rapping in the tradition of the Crash Crew and Funky Four plus 1

@FuriousStylesIV Nah not really. Hot97 loved it. But it was just rap beef. They were also really rich successful dudes at the time fairly removed from the streets. If the battle had happened in like 95 it’d been different

Serious question for NY'ers: when these 2 were beefin was the streets on fire? Like did yall feel like things were going to go down? Example: when cube and cypress hill were beefin the block was hot so to speak
According 2 Hip Hop@A2HHTheGame

Jay-Z confirms that the Nas BAR ‘Lex with tv sets the minimum’ was The beginning of their battle and he regrets he and nas were beefing: “I actually regret that, because I really like Nas. He’s a really nice guy” - Jay-Z

@BeyondTheMemes True. In 93-94 when Nas solidified his greatness hip hip was still pure and heads would critique your every move. Kane got critiqued like crazy too. Big and then later Jay was a more commercial era and people accepted that street rappers would be a little commercial

It’s because Nas debuted before the Bad Boy-ification of NYC happened and East Coast greatness was still measured on a boom bap scale. He had to adjust to that—and if you loved boom bap in 1994, you prolly resented a lot about 1996 mafioso-ism.
Spydolo@saye_yadolo

It’s weird. Biggie 2pac Jayz never got criticized for doing Mainstream songs. Only Nas they say went commercial. He’s the only GOAT Rapper that they look at as the Perfect Rapper so he’s not allowed to do anything commercial. Itvwas criticized back then by Purist now the same purist are saying It was written is better than illmatic. Funny as phuck. Only Nas gets this treatment.

@BeyondTheMemes I hear ya — BIG pushed that style forward, but the whole New Jack Swing and Teddy Riley thing merged a lot of hip hop and R&B as well two or three years before BIG. I mean, Slick Rick had a verse on Al B Sure’s album in like 1989

The R&Bification of East Coast street rappers is directly attributable to Biggie. That’s why you can’t just reduce the impact of music to simply “two great albums.” Those albums’ influence and importance have to be considered. He represents a major shift.

Spoke to a teacher from New York. Makes $140,000/yr with a 10 month schedule. Retires in 2026 with ~ $90,000/yr pension + full health benefits. Traditional careers like this can be game changers. Why aren’t more people doing this?!
