I taught Claude to talk like a caveman to use 75% less tokens.
normal claude: ~180 tokens for a web search task
caveman claude: ~45 tokens for the same task
"I executed the web search tool" = 8 tokens
caveman version: "Tool work" = 2 tokens
every single grunt swap saves 6-10 tokens. across a FULL task that's 50-100 tokens saved
why does it work? caveman claude doesn't explain itself. it does its task first. gives the result. then stops.
no "I'd be happy to help you with that." no "Let me search the web for you" no more unnecessary filler words
"result. done. me stop."
50-75% burn reduction
with usage limits getting tighter every week this might be the most practical hack out there right now

@bcherny @0xPaulius Maybe roll this back. Your users are making quite the noise.
English

@0xPaulius Hmm are you using Opus on high effort? We started defaulting Opus to medium this week, you should have seen a little notification when you start your CLI
English

👋 we recently changed the default effort to medium to better balance intelligence with speed, based on median usage we were seeing in the wild.
You can change it anytime in the /model selector if you prefer low effort (faster) or high effort (more intelligence). The setting is sticky and will persist for your next session.
If you’ve changed effort to high already, can you double check you’re on the latest version, and that your CLAUDE.md’s (in /memory) don’t have confusing/conflicting instructions? That’s the most common cause.
[deleted a previous post where I accidentally said default is high, it’s early and I haven’t had coffee..]

@AnthropicAI @claudeai hopefully minor ask but driving me nuts: can you guys make it so the app on both Mac and iOS keeps the screen active when Claude code is off doing something? Some of us like to watch the system cook. Can be a setting on backend.

Anthropic just took a big swipe at OpenAI's decision to put ads in ChatGPT. Anthropic is airing ads mocking ChatGPT ads during the Super Bowl, and they're hilarious 😅 Anthropic is also committing to no ads in Claude theverge.com/ai-artificial-…

PSA for anyone building a billing portal:
1. Keep receipts accessible for 16+ months. Your customers do taxes in Q1 and will discover your 12 month default right when they need month 13. Ask me how I know.
2. Add a bulk export button. Making someone click “download” 47 times gives them ample opportunity to reconsider whether your product is worth $12,000/year.

Cancelled my Pro subscription. Beginning the influence of advertisers is the beginning of the end of a truly unbiased model. Disappointed, but happy I’m given the out to go to @claudeai instead ahead of it being deeply integrated into my life. Wished for better from you as a leader.

We are starting to test ads in ChatGPT free and Go (new $8/month option) tiers.
Here are our principles. Most importantly, we will not accept money to influence the answer ChatGPT gives you, and we keep your conversations private from advertisers.
It is clear to us that a lot of people want to use a lot of AI and don't want to pay, so we are are hopeful a business model like this can work.
(An example of ads I like are on Instagram, where I've found stuff I like that I otherwise never would have. We will try to make ads ever more useful to users.)

In the coming weeks, we plan to start testing ads in ChatGPT free and Go tiers. We’re sharing our principles early on how we’ll approach ads–guided by putting user trust and transparency first as we work to make AI accessible to everyone. What matters most: - Responses in ChatGPT will not be influenced by ads. - Ads are always separate and clearly labeled. - Your conversations are private from advertisers. - Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise tiers will not have ads.

@YourFriendAndy People rarely consider the depreciation benefits when doing this through an LLC. Changes the profitability numbers a lot.
