Sayid Mohamed Abdulle Hassan remains one of the most influential figures in Somali history. He founded the Dervish Movement to resist colonial powers who threatened the Somali society and Islam, uniting thousands in a struggle that lasted over two decades against British, Italian, and Ethiopian forces. Once dismissed as the “Mad Mullah,” he is today remembered as the Father of Somali Nationalism

Sulieman, thanks for sharing that. You genuinely had my sympathy until the last line. Waad soo bandhigi kartaa qadiyaddaada adoon qolada kale caayin walaal. There are many reasonable people who are willing to engage and debate with you fairly but once insults enter the conversation, people naturally become defensive and the real message gets lost.

That man exactly he did what i used to do in decades. Between 1986 and 1989, when I lived in Mogadishu, I used to go to the National Theatre for entertainment. Every night, I carried a small knife in my pocket and quietly cut the chair I was sitting on. Why? Because even as a young man, I felt the deep injustice of how the Somali state treated the North — today’s #Somaliland. The taxes collected from our regions were systematically denied to us. Instead of developing Hargeisa, Burco, Berbera, or any part of the North, the regime poured everything into Mogadishu. To me, that imbalance was not just unfair — it was a deliberate policy of exclusion. So in my youthful frustration, I reacted by damaging whatever public property I could reach. It was a symbolic protest against a government that used our resources but refused to invest in our people. Today, with hindsight, the story is not about the knife or the chair. It is about the political reality that pushed an entire generation of #Somaliland youth to feel alienated in their own country — a reality that ultimately led Somaliland to reclaim its sovereignty and build its own path to stability. When it comes choise, don't ever make your choice with the most corrupt human being on earth Somalians.

One of my friends told me he recently visited Hargeisa, Somalia, without getting a Somalia e-visa. When I asked how that was possible, he said he flew to Addis Ababa, stayed there a few nights on an Ethiopian e-visa, then took a local flight to Jigjiga and crossed by car via Togwajaale into Somalia. The whole journey took about six hours, instead of the 1 hour 25 minutes it would’ve taken if he’d just flown directly from Addis to Hargeisa with a Somalia e-visa. I couldn’t help thinking — that’s a lot of travel gymnastics just to avoid a Somalia e-visa! You’re happy to get an Ethiopian one, but not Somalia’s?

The Office of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) issued the following statement following the incident at her town hall in North Minneapolis. “During her town hall, an agitator tried to attack the Congresswoman by spraying an unknown substance with a syringe. Security and the Minneapolis Police Department quickly apprehended the individual. He is now in custody. The Congresswoman is okay. She continued with her town hall because she doesn’t let bullies win.”

The people of Djibouti are among the most welcoming and hospitable I have ever encountered. It is also the most stable country I have lived in. Djibouti is a progressive nation, and congratulations to the people of Djibouti and to their government for building and maintaining such a peaceful, resilient, and forward-looking country.

Today, I hosted basketball star @Jamaaad , the founder of Jamad Basketball Camps , at my office. We discussed the interconnected and vital role of sports and culture in nurturing talents, instilling discipline and expanding opportunities for young people in line with the Bottom-up economic transformation Agenda. We also explored avenues of collaboration especially in leveraging culture and sports to empower young girls, supporting the growth of their talents while maintaining the traditions they hold near and dear to them.

Madobe, Cirro, and my friend Deni must understand without ambiguity, who holds constitutional authority in this country. Under Somalia’s Provisional Constitution, the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) is the supreme national authority responsible for sovereignty and external national security. Those who believe the FGS can be ignored, bypassed, or undermined are misguided and dangerously wrong. At this critical moment, the FGS must act decisively and introduce a 30-day nationwide land, air, and sea curfew, to restore order and ensure that new national directives are implemented effectively and corrective measures take full effect

⚡️ Somalia has cancelled all its agreements with the UAE, accusing it of violating the country’s sovereignty. The agreements covered ports, security, and defense arrangements.

BREAKING: The #Somali Cabinet has cancelled all agreements with the UAE, including port, security, and defense deals linked to Berbera, Bosaso, and Kismayo, citing violations of Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and constitutional order.

This is long overdue and truly welcome news—congratulations to the Federal Government. The UAE has violated Somalia’s sovereignty on multiple levels, and continues to do so even now by accepting separatist documents in an apparent attempt to appease Benjamin Netanyahu. Such actions are unacceptable, undermine Somalia’s territorial integrity.

The Federal Government of Somalia should temporarily relocate the national capital to Las-Anod for a period of ten years. This strategic move would serve two critical national objectives. 1. Relieve Pressure on Mogadishu Mogadishu has carried the political, security, demographic, and administrative burden of the state for decades under extraordinary strain. A temporary relocation would: •Allow Mogadishu to undergo long-term, planned redevelopment •Enable infrastructure, urban planning, and security reforms without daily political pressure 2. End the Separatist Ideology at Its Core Las Anod sits at the heart of contested narratives over sovereignty. Establishing it as a temporary capital would: •Reassert constitutional federal authority across all regions •Collapse the false claim that certain regions exist outside the Somali state

Somalia’s national security requires the immediate and comprehensive deployment of the Somali National Army to all international border crossings and sensitive frontier areas. This includes, Buhoodle, Moyale, Galdogob, Togwajaale, and Lowyacado, as well as all other official and unofficial entry points along Somalia’s borders. A permanent SNA presence is essential to protect Somalia’s sovereignty, prevent illegal crossings, and uphold the country’s constitutional territorial integrity.

Sarah, you are mistaken. If you genuinely want to understand the facts, please consider the following: 1.Somalia existed as a single civilisational and territorial concept before colonisation. Prior to European partition, the land inhabited by Somalis was collectively known as Somalia, encompassing all Somali-inhabited regions. Colonial powers later fragmented this territory into five parts: French Somaliland, Italian Somaliland, British Somaliland, the Northern Frontier District (NFD), and Ogaden. 2.British Somaliland was never recognised internationally as a sovereign state prior to 1 July 1960. At no point before that date did British Somaliland enjoy recognition as an independent state or permanent political entity under international law. 3.On 26 June 1960, British Somaliland gained independence solely to unite with Italian Somaliland. Just four days later, on 1 July 1960, it voluntarily and legally united with Italian Somaliland to form the Somali Republic. This unified republic, not British Somaliland alone was what received broad international recognition from states and international organisations. 4.The Somali Constitution was approved by a national referendum and governs territorial change. Somalia conducted a nationwide constitutional referendum that was approved by the majority of Somalis. This constitution explicitly states that any alteration to the territorial integrity or borders of the Somali Republic requires a referendum of all citizens of the republic, not a unilateral regional declaration. 5.Claims of a clearly defined “Somaliland territory” are historically inaccurate. When European colonisers partitioned Africa, borders were arbitrarily drawn with little or no understanding of local realities. Crucially, British colonial rule never fully extended to large parts of what is today claimed as Somaliland, particularly Sool, Sanaag, and Buuhoodle. Local communities actively resisted British control in these areas until independence. So the question must be asked: which “defined territory” is being claimed, the arbitrary colonial lines, or the actual territorial that British operates or controlled? 6. Somalia inherited its borders as a unified post-colonial state in 1960. No region has the legal right to secede unilaterally without the consent of the entire sovereign population. This principle has been consistently upheld by the African Union, the United Nations, and the international community at large.
Sarah Hearn OBE@SarahEHearn

Somaliland is not a “breakaway” state. It was internationally recognized in 1960, voluntarily united with Somalia, and since 1991 has sought re-recognition within its original borders, grounded in a functioning democracy. That distinction isn’t semantic. It’s essential for Somaliland’s deserved recognition, especially within the African Union and European Union, which are cautious about secessionist precedents.
