Omfg - I’ve deleted the European census tweet. All the anger. Christ - put what you like people. I’m not bothered. For me, we live in a European country and I feel that’s part of the nation’s identity & my identity. Same for Englishness & Britishness. I feel both. Some don’t. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Why are people more bothered about people in secure jobs with great pensions only getting a small pay rise on top of the the one they've already had, than the millions that have been stuck on 80% of their wages for a year or have lost their jobs?

@AlanDownunder @tomhfh If that is right, then, in my mind, this becomes about wealth distribution. Protecting the pound means those with assets dont lose out on an international stage, but it also means the workers can't be paid.

@AlanDownunder @tomhfh Similar arguments. My point was that there IS a magic money tree, because Gov debt is unimpeachable. But if it's all spend with no overall increase in tax then the currency is devalued. Is that not right?

@AlanDownunder @tomhfh A liability as defined in tax law. That's a circular argument. The national debt is also not really a debt.

@james_beaum_ @Manoama89203646 @DavidLammy And remember, this is about a survey question asking you to pick a 'colour' then refine the origin. It's not saying black people can't be British. It's acknowledging that "black DNA" rarely originates from the British Isles.

The 2021 census form is a muddle. In the ‘ethnic category’ why can’t I be both Black Carribean & English when I was born in London? Why can’t my kids be both mixed Black & White and English (their mother was born in Northampton)? Since when do you need to be White to be English?

@AlanDownunder @tomhfh Tax is just a way to pay back what we call the National Debt. It doesn't have to be a tax on spending.

@adavescott @tomhfh It would be nice if taxing the rich was more disinflationary than taxing those with a greater marginal propensity to spend, but the opposite is the case. Tax the rich to equalise power and influence and worry about deflation now, not inflation.

@adavescott @james_beaum_ @DavidLammy Actually England for all its failings IS our country, it’s in a political union with Scotland, Wales & NI but it’s still a country by right. And sadly it looks increasingly likely that the political Union between the countries won’t last for much longer.

I infer you mean people who are born in England. Thats not helpful to a survey question about ethnic origin.
