Hey CC friends, a bit of good news. I stopped in at my PCP’s office to pick up some paperwork. Sign on the door: Face masks required. (They provided surgical masks at the entrance, but it’s something. My experience is anyone from the clinic in the exam room wears a respie.)

‘Tech companies believe in intellectual property, but not yours.” Great piece in The Atlantic pointing out that AI companies spend huge amounts of money simultaneously (i) defending their own IP and (ii) arguing that they can use other people’s for free. theatlantic.com/technology/202…

@michael_hoerger So curious about Washington state having limited data. So odd. I had an exchange w Snohomish County wastewater folks about their method (rolling 7-day; 1 day of too low to count made entire week to 0). I asked how that helps folks rate risk & got a TY & promised reconsideration.

The current forecast is for steady to lightly declining transmission as we enter the relative "lull" in between the 12th and seemingly inevitable 13th U.S. COVlD wave. 🧵THREAD 8 of 8

PMC #COVID Update, March 23, 2026 (U.S.) Transmission levels have plummeted nationally as we shift from the 12th wave toward a relative "lull." Over half the states have "Very Low" relative transmission, per the CDC. 🧵THREAD 1 of 8

🦔 NV Energy is cutting off power to Lake Tahoe's Liberty Utilities by May 2027, leaving 49,000 customers without 75% of their electricity supply. NV Energy said it can't continue the contract because of its "own resource needs." At a business event last September, an NV Energy executive said data centers have driven requests to triple the company's peak capacity, calling it "unprecedented times" and adding that they're "excited to serve this load" but "cannot impact our existing customer base." Liberty Utilities now has about a year to find replacement power, likely from sources outside California since it's not physically connected to California's energy market. My Take A utility is telling 49,000 residential customers to find electricity elsewhere because data centers need the capacity. That's the tradeoff being made explicit. NV Energy didn't frame it that way, but when your executive says data center requests would triple peak capacity and then you cut off a decades-long customer to meet your "own resource needs," the math is obvious. This is happening while AI companies burn through electricity at rates that would have seemed absurd five years ago. Jensen wants engineers using $250,000 in tokens per year. OpenAI is building data centers that need their own power plants. And now a ski town is being told to find power somewhere else because the grid can't serve both them and the machines. The NV Energy executive said they can't impact their existing customer base, but Liberty's customers are their existing customer base. They just decided which customers matter more. Hedgie🤗

In February 2026, Puerto Rico broke from the CDC to begin using red to depict higher COVID risk and include numbers on their vertical axis. Every day, we have the opportunity to fight COVID, and that's a data scientist making the right decision to stick their neck out. 👏👏👏

The CDC depicts COVID data with a "cool blue" map that violates ethical norms for geospatial analysis. Their longitudinal graph uses a cool blue vertical axis, no numbers. Studies have shown the general public quickly interprets red as risk and blue as cool. #CalmMongering

By failing to treat shelter (along with food and water) as a human right and obligation, we create a permanent caste system, where humanity is born into hereditary debt to a select few who claim to own the Earth. This is called feudalism. It’s medieval and unsustainable.

Why do we not think that what we are doing to Cuba won’t be something the rest of the world won’t do to us? Also saw a warning about many generic drugs — expect a shortage in as little as 6 weeks. Talk w your provider about a plan to taper.
